Like the old bareknuckle pugilists used.
Was it banned with MofQ rules, or even before that?
Or did the early gloved fighters use it still?

It wasn't legal but Baer used it a lot. Because he was an activist. He tried to change the system from within. I have heard it said that when he hung with Mae West, he was an early gloved fighter. I don't know if any of this answers your questions.

I heard it said that he was bare skin, bareknuckle, instead. I dunno if you heard what I heard, but I clearly never heard what you heard, ya hear me?

I’m a 96lber (little on the muscle bound side not skinny I have small bones) and the back hand is one of my favourite “dark” move. It catches them off guard big time and you can make it look like an accident.
