You have your opinion, I have mine. Roy is just speed, not impressed. Different strokes for different folks.
No reason to believe he couldn't. The question is could Carlos find that needle in a haystack? Jones was slippery and elusive. Quite often his opponents punch output would dwindle because of the threat of his power.
I've seen Roy down opponents with his lightning right hand which could be delivered as a hook or cross. I have even seen him stop opponents with right hands to the body and have deemed that Jones would indeed be a threat to Monzon
^ and then there's Roy left hand He blitzes opponents with a two fisted attack that is second to none only prime Camacho comes close to matching Roy's speed
With all due respect, speed looks nice but not very impressive. Again different strokes for different folks. Rodrigo Valdes hit harder than Jones at 160, Carlos got up and won.
Not sure about that. Probably enough to keep Carlos honest though. It’s really hard to pick someone to stop a Monzon or Hager for example when no one really came close to doing so in their actual career.
I agree with that. At the sametime to be realistic Roy Jones was a once in a lifetime talent. His blend of speed and power not something you see everyday. Monzon has no real advantages here and several disadvantages.
Jones at 160-68 was as good as it gets. Faster p4p than nearly everyone with some crushing power to go with it. You can say Roy never faced as complete a fighter and technician as Monzon but Carlos never faced the athletic disadvantages he’d face against Jones in his career. Like I said I won’t say Jones stops him (and the best fighters Roy faced invariably took him the distance) but Monzon isn’t a lock here either despite having the greater middleweight career.
There's no fan alive that could honestly say that they're not impressed with Roy, but they ARE impressed with Monzon! Manzon is arguably the weakest legend/top 3-5 of a division that we have on film. Whereas Roy is easily the best.
Nice little post. Jones actually had HUGE power and it may have even been at it's best during his short tenure at 160. Tho he didn't exactly clear out the division the only two to last were Hopkins and the uber experienced never before stopped Castro around the 16 fight mark.
Would have been a pretty decent fight. The interesting question is would Jones be able to outbox Monzon? YES he would. But would he be able to outbox him over the course of twelve/fifteeen rounds? NO he would n't. Monzon's greater power and chin see him through to a late rounds stoppage.
Monzon was not a concussive hitter like McClellan or Jackson. Monzon did not hit harder than Jones. Roy had one punch knock out power. Monzon was bigger than his adversaries. Jones is even bigger than him.
