I do not resent Roy Jones Jr, but I am not enamored with him as you are. Flashy fighters who try to emulate Muhammad Ali are not impressive, there was only one Ali, he was great. Jones never retired as champion like Monzon did, he became a Benjamin Button clone with Tarver and Glen Johnson, Lol. Nice try at Psychology but you cannot cut the mustard Pal.
Roy dared to be great and went up to Heavyweight..... it's well documented that stripping that mass off on the way back down to LHW was detrimental. He was no longer the force he once was.
No worries. I’ve only been asking as you keep saying things like Roy never retired as a champion, whereas Carlos did. Yet to me, that’s not at all relevant to an actual match up at MW.
Not sure where you're going with this, Richard. There doesn't seem to be any bias against Lectoure or suggestion that his Latin background is in any way reason not to trust him. I think it was just being suggested that he would have got any advantage he could for Carlos, smaller ring being one of them. I'd expect most promoters from across the world to do the same for their fighter. Mickey Duff would have wangled any advantage for his fighters but my saying that isn't anti-Semitic, just a nod to his ability to look after his man which is what @ETM was saying. I also don't see where he has shown a dislike towards Monzon but if you think people do dislike him, I wouldn't assume it is due to his non-showman nature. If people do dislike Monzon, the fact that he was a woman-battering, sadistic bully, sociopath and a murderer might all be better reasons than his having a quiet nature. He's not an appealing man but that's beside the point and not what's being discussed. What's being discussed is talent and ability and for some Jones' wealth of both at middleweight might have been too much. Monzon divides the board between those who see a consummate ring general who always found a way to win and those who see a stand up straight, quite stiff, predictable fighter who ruled over a less than stellar era of middleweights. I am with the latter. I just don't get it with Monzon. Jones on the other hand looks special to me and not because of any showmanship but due to his blinding speed, power, inventiveness. That may come across as flashy showmanship next to Monzon's more earnest approach but the quality men who hit the floor when facing prime Jones would attest that he could back it up with his fists. In this fight, Jones is the least surprised. He's seen plenty of guys with Monzon's jab and right cross style. Monzon, however, is in unchartered waters as were all of Jones' opponents and I can't see him prevailing.
Just to add that shortly before this fight, Thomas Tate went 12 hard rounds with one of the hardest hitting fighters of all time aka Julian Jackson. Roy Jones easily dispatched Tate in just 2 rounds. I know i may sound ridiculous for saying this, but Monzon would look like a sloth against Jones. And i just think Jones's speed would be far too much for Monzon.
Copy and paste my response to you just now, in the Hagler-Benitez thread. Can't find fault with a word that you say.
The only thing that I really I object to, is stating that Carlos retired as the MW champ, whereas Roy didn’t. To me, that is completely irrelevant. The only thing we should be focusing upon, is how they’d realistically have matched up stylistically.
The difference in handspeed in this fight would be unreal. Then again Jones was at his best at 168 not 160.
I think Roy is the nightmare of all nightmares for MOST fighters between 160-175. Stylistically, RJJ wouldn't have a problem with Carlos.
