Hello Mr. Poopy, Thank you for your insightful reply. Rocky Marciano was an amazingly talented fighter with more heart and work ethic than nearly any heavy who ever lived. Have a great day.
Right then you realize Marciano had no talent in the ring. He was slow and unskilled. The only reason he won fights was because of how hand picked his opponents were. He was either fighting tomato cans, guys hand picked by the mafia , or old men like Joe Louis, Walcott, Charles, and Moore. Marciano had no heart. If he did he would of fought guys who weren't tomato cans, mob controlled fighters or old men. Rocky Marciano is by far the most overrated boxer who has ever lived. Have a great day.
I'd love to see a list of who these great fighters were, who Marciano didn't fight...those guys, from his era, who would have beaten Rocky. I seemed to have missed seeing them during those years.
Errant nonsense. All of Marciano's title challengers except Cockell, were the current #1 ranked Ring Magazine Contender, and Cockell was the #2 contender. There were literally no more qualified men that he could have fought. What you make of his era is a matter of interpretation, but you can't fault his choice of opponents.
Marciano could of came out of retirement in 1966 and taken that million $ offer to face Ali, be fat and overweight coming in the ring, and some how land the perfect right hand to give Ali the ten count in the first round, regains the title, and goes back in retirement, and people would claim so what?? That was a green Ali, not the one that had wars with Foreman, Frazier or Norton.
Hand picked ? He was fighting the very best available challengers of that time. The only one he didn’t face was Nino Valdez but Valdez wasn’t ranked near the top for very long and Marciano defeated his conquerors anyway. I picked wilder to beat Marciano due to his unbearable advantages. But this claim that Marciano was untalented or fought handpicked opponents isn’t very supported, Poopey.
Right as I said hand picked opponents. When your best opponents were old men then that is a problem. That being said Roland LaStarza a 180 pound fighter beat him in their first bout and Ted Lowry a 170-180 pound fighter also beat Marciano in their first bout. If you actually think Marciano had legit world class skills then you aren't worth my time and I won't waste anymore time typing to you. Marciano was slow, crude, and only looked good because of the horrible opposition he faced. Bye bye.
So let's take Marciano of the first two fights against Walcott where he weighed 185 pounds against Wilder who fought Dominic Breazeale where he weighed 223 pounds, that's a 38 pound weight advantage on top of that Wilder is 6'6 against Rocky's 5'10 and then there's Wilder's 83 inch reach Vs Marciano's 68 inch reach which is smaller than every current light welterweight to welterweight. That's three huge advantages for Wilder. Wilder is bigger, taller, stronger and faster. Wilder isn't gonna fear Rocky's size and come forward and blast him out in about 4 rounds, now I've gained more respect for Rocky over the last year or so but this is a stylistic nightmare and Rocky is a greater fighter and history will always view him as a better person so most people don't want to accept that a guy like Wilder could beat him.
4 rounds? Rocky Marciano would never last 1 round against Wilder. Also Rocky Marciano wasn't a great fighter. He was a mediocre fighter who was lucky to be a Italian guy boxing in a era where the Italian Mafia controlled boxing.
The point was not if Rocky could beat Ali ( A answer we will never know,) but no matter what Marciano does he really does not get the credit he should get. He was one of the few champs to really clear out his era, something Dempsey, Holmes, Jeffries or even Jack Johnson cannot claim. No matter how good or bad you think Marciano's era was, Marciano left little argument he was the best of his era. There was no Harry Wills was better, or Holmes sure let a lot of want a be champs running around. Or facing only the white guys when you finally won the title. Yes the likes of Sam Langford should have got that title shot. Marciano was the best of his era.
