Cleveland Williams..this is about my favorite fighter cleveland big cat williams

You're educated already. Choklab is actually not even the most vicious of that bunch, but they'll come from all directions just cuz of how positive your thread is on Williams.

 

What did Cleveland do wrong?

 

Absolutely nothing.

 

I’m a fan of Cleve’s. The 2 x punch outs vs Sonny are classics which seem less often included when slugfests like Shavers v Lyle and Foreman v Lyle are mentioned. .

His later career effort to hang tough and see out the fight vs Chuvalo was a great credit to him also. He could still punch and stopped George dead in his tracks on a few occasions. George was already busted up by the early rounds.

I liked how he and Liston appeared to have a respectful connection outside the ring - certainly there is that great photo of Liston visiting Cleve in hospital after he was hit by the bullet. You could see how wasted Cleve had become before building himself back up. There’s a photo online of a recovered (never fully, of course) Williams meeting back up with the policeman involved.

Williams seems to be almost as divisive a figure here as a certain little Italian/American.
