He was on a roll by then beating a few good names. He was nearer his peak than when he faced Ali obviously, that fight would have been a damn sight closer imo with the younger Liston. Anyway, question is, taking THAT version of Sonny, who'd he be capable of beating iyo, through out the years? Great, massive jab, strength and ko power, there's a few I see him beating.
Ali still beats him, probably ... Liston happened to come up against the most athletic HW in History coming into Prime ,,, how would any past prime boxer do at age 34, 35?? Liston had all around solid skills imo and it would have been a different fight in 59 60
It would, a lot closer imo and Ali would have to take more hard shots. An early 1960 s Liston could maybe beat most of the first half of the 1900 champ s imo, apart from probably Louis and maybe Jack Johnson. He was a beast.
Sonny Liston beat 180 pound glass chin Floyd Patterson and slow as molasses glass chin Cleveland Williams. That was pretty much his whole career. Since the early 's 60s to today Sonny Liston is the most overrated heavyweight champion. Frazier would of beat him, Ron Lyle would of beat him, Foreman would of beat him, Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko. Hell I would even pick guys like Gerry Cooney (None alcoholic) to beat Liston.
Williams was not slow. Liston cleared out the heavyweight division before getting his overdue title shot. Either you don't know anything about him or you are trolling,or is it both?
Patterson’s reign is a dark patch for mine - several excellent fighters precluded a shot and Liston himself being delayed from annexing the title and some extra potential defences under his belt. Before beating Patterson, Liston was basically Champ by proxy for a few years. Sonny’s own title reign cut short by way of a combination of advancing age and, most importantly, having to face none other than Muhammad Ali after dispatching Floyd in the rematch. IF NOT for Ali, Liston might’ve still had a few good years left in him as Champ. I liken Liston facing Ali to an older Norton’s first defence of his so called paper title being against freaking Larry Holmes - of all people. Still, a fight for the ages and one that could be argued for as a draw such was the p-hair difference between the two. Anyway, as to the suggestion of Floyd’s glass chin - ONLY ever put down for the 10 count by Liston - how much more could Sonny prove himself beyond dispatching Floyd in little over 2 mins in each fight LOTs of knowledgeable posters here already know this stuff backwards, but sometimes you feel it just has to be repeated to maintain proper perspective.
Right if you think Cleveland Williams was a fast heavyweight then you are a troll and now you are blocked.
Right I am kind of sick and tired of reading your post. You clearly don't really know what you are talking about. Dismissed.
Liston did fight many of Ali's opponents back when they were younger and better like Williams and Folley and won more convincingly. Have heard from various sources like Manny Steward thinking Prime Liston vs 60s Ali is a tossup and Liston's biographer saying that next to Ali a Prime Liston would be the HW H2H GOAT. Liston was the only one to intimidate Foreman and have read that in the late 60s Frazier's camp avoided him.
I have that version of Liston in my top 5 h2h. He had it all. Power, durability, body punching, killer instinct, great fundamentals, could pace himself to go the distance, subtle defense, good ring IQ, a good grasp on range control, great variety of punches. He was an 8 or higher in almost every category except speed. Prime Liston was an armored freight train of a fighter.
I said he wasn't slow and he wasn't. ps You blocking me won't exactly spoil my day.lol Your posts are abysmal.
