In the immediate aftermath of the fight, Donald Curry (who was working for British television) was highly critical of the loser. He said "Tommy fought the wrong fight. He should have started cautiously, lose the first couple of rounds. Don't get into a dogfight, but that's what he did. He got into a dogfight with Marvin and he lost."

Hearns vs Hagler is one of the best fights ever. All boxing fights should be like this.

I've said that for years, after the 1st two minutes of rd 1 the fight was all
Hagler. The only real drama was if the fight would be stopped for the
cut Hagler received. But even that was a little over blown because
it wasn't in a real bad spot. It was on his forehead.

I don't think so. They came out going tops and what happened with the broken hand and cut makes sense. It had to end the way it did in a few rounds and the way it did.. I don't think it was overrated at all, and I think it stands the test of time.

exactly.. IT was something else watching it live and seeing Hearns throw right after right and Hagler coming forward throwing also. We didn't expect that, and still don't.. Overrated? How could it have been greater. Hagler was not going to do anthing but throw and get hit and take chances, and Tommy was going to throw..

Watched the fight live on TV. Both my friend and I had bowls of popcorn on our laps. We had handfuls of popcorn on the way to our mouths but it didn't get there because the first round was so electric our hands were suspended halfway to our mouths.

It was an unbelievably hyped fight between two greats. Imagine Floyd and Manny having the same round in their fight and you get an inclination of what it meant at the time.

watched it live on TV too and still feel it was one of the most exciting fights ever .. How could it not ?? being 2 of the best just wanting to knock each other out ,, give 1 take 1 .. I'm tougher than you .. I'll take that over a cherry picked Mayweather fight any day of the week and twice on Sundays ..

Jack, when the Italo-Spaniard known as Il Duce was threatened with execution, he was purported to have ripped open his blouse, commanding that he be shot directly in his heart, as he simultaneously and fairly generally said "Heick! Heick Isht Staug gaun frauen del duplicitae muck schpukas me dispiace diorama!" which was an ancient middle Austro-Hungarian battle cry reputedly loosely translated to "Me! I am great! I am the greatest! Please! Hear me now! For I am sorry that there is a mess on the table! But please! Do not forsake my words, woman! Do not give thine best cheese to the house guest for that house guest is the prisoner of our nation!"

Well, Jack, I don't think anyone would accuse Marvin Hagler of getting the best cheese that night, Jack.

No way could Floyd and Manny have had a round like that, Floyd didn`t have Hagler or Hearns power and could never o toe to toe with Manny like that, nearest he came to this fight was some rounds v Cotto.

Hagler was never hated by the media. He was very well respected
and appreciated for his no nonsense approach to boxing .
His problem was the biggest names and best fighters he faced
all had to move up in weight to fight him. That took time .

    Yeesh, tough crowd.

Hard disagree with people saying this fight is one for "only the casuals". Full knowledge of who each of the principals were and the legacies they carved before as well as following this summit, and placing all that in historical context, only enhances appreciation of the violence they shared.

Hagler v Hearns was a great fight…but ‘tis still a bit overrated I think.

Context, reputations, real time feel, drama etc. are the very things one tries to divorce themselves from when rating a fight objectively, based purely on its own merits.

In contrast, Hagler v Leonard was great to watch in real time but it’s attraction was comprised that much more of context, rep, drama etc. than the action therein - action which in itself seemed great in real time but not so much upon cold, subsequent re-viewings.

In light of Marv’s prior and post understated performances v Duran and Leonard respectively, I’m very happy that Hags secured his own most characteristic and brutally defining win v a fellow member of The Fab Four, pulling him very much in line at the least with the balance of the elite crew.

Of course, Roberto and Ray were other animals again inviting a different dynamic but at least we can muse over what might’ve been IF an inexplicably reserved Hags had instead tore into them like he did Tommy or at least be proactively that much more aggressive and fight to his absolute strengths, not his weaknesses.

In the United States Hearns became recognizeable to even casuals after his loss in 81' to Leonard, headlining a ppv in 82' vs Wilfredo Benitez.
When you've fought Leonard even in defeat you become recognizeable, even more so after the showing vs Leonard in which everyone who witnessed it was looking foward to a rematch.

yes he was. some of them right from my home town.and you cant tell me they didnt because I read the articles. they were what you call media wimps

why do you think Hagler repeatedly said he didnt get respect?
