He's rated about right here. In his prime he's a top 10 HW in any era but loses to the top guys. He'd give Holyfield and Tyson a run for their money. No way I see him beating a prime Ali, Liston, Holmes, Fury, Usyk tho. Anyone over 6'3" who can jab and move should be favored to take a decision against him. His chin is sturdy so don't think anyone is knocking him out.

 

Tua was far too durable.

 

Tyson Tua is 50/50 for me.

Holyfield I favor, however, I give Tua a chance based on this triple left hook he gave Holyfield in his preparation for Tyson.

I wouldn’t say he’s overrated it’s just more so many fans believe he would have been a champion had his prime years were in the mid to late 80s or early 2000s just before Wlad became dominant. The 90s was an extremely tough era for HWs..

 

First I don't see people talking about how great Tua is second Rocky Marciano, Jack Johnson, and Gen Tunney are far more overrated than Tua is.

 

Um 200 plus pounds was a heavyweight back in the 90's and early 200's and 200 plus pounds is still a heavyweight today lol. Did you just start watching boxing a few years ago and think there weren't 200 plus pound guys until recently? In terms of height Tua beat Calvin Jones who was 6'6 270. I guess that is a light heavyweight to you.

 

Any boxer with this skill set you mention would never have won 1 fight, let alone beat good fighters

He has power that can win him any fight if his opponent slips up at the wrong time.

Not a great fighter - but with his chin and left hook he’s potential trouble for anyone.

 

I'm starting to realize that inconsistent boxers will always be underrated or overrated in someone's minds depending on whether you assess them by their best or worst performances.

Tua could have been a champion but I don't think he could have ever been THE guy because A) he got outboxed a lot B) his power was really good but he was still a small hw and some guys just aren't gonna get knocked out. He would have to have a really specific path of fighting guys like Maskaev and Rahman when they held belts without running into guys like Byrd on the way.

And btw, in most of Tua's best wins, I don't think he even demonstrated that he beats that guy ever time.

So yeah I agree he isn't a h2h monster because so many potential matchups he's gonna get outboxed and his power won't bail him out.

 

Tua would have always KTFO Ruiz and Moorer.

 

No one overrates Tua, it's almost universally acknowledged that he can be outboxed sometimes quite easily. It's almost universally also acknowledged he had the power to detach you from your senses if he caught you.

No one is considering him a top 50 HW, I don't even think top 100. His power is definitely at the highest level though
