Its not okay to call boxers Tomato cans or bums

Sports entertainment. We're allowed to judge. Just like you can't make a Hollywood blockbuster, but you can say that it sucked.

 

I had the runs this morning, lasted a lot longer than 10 seconds.

 

Can people say it? Yes, because it’s all relative they are comparing elite professional boxers against much less level professional boxers and have the right to say whatever they like.

Would I say it? No, these journeyman type of boxers help boxing at all levels and deserve respect, and anyone who steps in to the ring deserves credit for even getting in to the ring, it’s tough in there believe me. I understand the sentiment about chess and tennis, but it’s a different game getting hit in the face than playing golf, chess or tennis.

 

I don't think anyone actually really means it when they call a fighter a bum. We're all aware of what it takes to even get in a ring and 99% lack the necessary balls to engage in combat.

It's like calling someone a *****.

 

Sorry. From now on I'll call them "bums relative to world champions" so you don't get so emotional about it.

 

I am sure boxers must get so upset because a keyboard warrior calls them a nasty name.

Being a member of the Joe Louis "Bum of the month club" back in late 30s/early 40s may have sounded derogatory, but fact was majority were either top ten rated or had been previously.

I am not a fan of folk calling a boxer a tomato can or a bum, but likewise i get fed up with all the trash talking that fighters and fans enter into anyway, however lot of folk like it so each to their own.

I think a fighter has something more worrying to deal with over and above nasty remarks, namely the guy in opposite corner who wishes to change their consciousness with their gloved mitts.

 

Our gentleman's bet is on the line for this weekend with Khan vs Brook. Want to up the stakes before Saturday night? I have an idea.

How about this, if Brook wins, I have to make a GGG appreciation topic and talk about how great GGG is and how good he did against Canelo. If Khan wins, you have to make a Canelo appreciation topic and talk about how great Canelo is and how good he did against GGG. Deal?

 

We are the paying customers. If it wasn’t for us most of these guys would be toiling away doing menial jobs in obscurity. Their professional status doesn’t exempt them from criticism.

 

Speak for yourself there pal. If you can't run 10 seconds without drinking water you must be a real slob.

 

My old trainer heard a young guy call an older fighter a bum. He grabbed him & said " That man you called a bum fought three world champions in his career & beat 2 of them" I think I'll just pop over there & tell him that OK "? The kid was terrified. blabbering The old trainer said" No one calls a pro boxer whos laced Em up, bit down on the mouthpiece & gone to war that while I'm around Now get outta here till you get some manners""
Kid never came back

 

"Tomato can" I can tolerate

"Bum" is out of line for such a dangerous profession.
