What boxers did Rocky Marciano consciously and deliberately duck, if any?

It's comical that you feel the need to denigrate Valdes wins over ranked contenders to excuse Marciano not fighting him.

I’m talking about at his retirement. Cockell was an obvious tune up easy one after the two Charles bouts (maybe to test the nose, just a guess). Wasn’t uncommon for the European champ/UK champ to get a shot. Easy pay day for all involved.

Hey, what gives? First of all, I never made that quote - you post the link and I'll look at it. You seem to be spoiling for a fight. If you want to debate issues, I'm in - I did well in debates in secondary school and university. If you want to go the other way, I can do that too - I taught in university and did standup comedy in clubs where I thrive on hecklers. But if attacked, I will respond. I will not take abuse.

You mean Marciano fought old men who were going to retire anyway or guys who were on losing streaks and were going to retire anyway.

By extra ingredient do you mean the mafia backing him? That is the only real talent Marciano had. Well that and beating up old men and tomato cans

Marciano had a will to win ,a total unwilingness to accept defeat or even the possibility of it.He was prepared to endure long, harsh spartan training camps in the knowledge that his style demanded 100% fitness and conditioning, prepared to accept 3 punches to get his own one in.Marciano had power.will, self belief, conditioning, determination ,and a great heart.

None of that came from the Mob.

Yes it was a gimmee, and there is nothing wrong with that, not until fans try and pretend it was a credible, serious deserved title challenge.

Cockell was the #2 ranked Ring Magazine contender, so he was unquestionably worthy.

Let me give this some context.

Rocky Marciano defended his title against the current #1 Ring Magazine contender five times, in a period of less than two years six months.

That is an average of twice a year.

Between the retirement of Lennox Lewis, and Wladamir Klitschko's defense against Alexander Povetkin, we went ten years six months without a fight between the two best heavyweights in the world!

Ten yeas without a lineal champion fighting the #1 contender, or the #1 contender fighting the #2 contender if there was no lineal champion.

All in all, I don't feel that Rocky Marciano did too bad!
