Hagler became the ring No.1 contender in 1977, what would have happened if Carlos hadn`t retired that year?

Carlos Monzon retired as World Middleweight Champion on August 29 1977. At the time of their title bout on July 30 1977 in Monte Carlo, Monaco, Rodrigo Valdes was the no.1 challenger, Monzon won by unanimous decision to retain his title. There was no interest in a Hagler vs Monzon fight in 1976, Hagler had lost two fights during that year, he would later avenge those loses. In 1976, the title unification bout between WBA Champion Carlos Monzon and WBC Champion Rodrigo Valdes had been signed for June 26 1976 in Monte Carlo, Monzon won a unanimous decision to unify the titles. Upon Monzon's retirement, both the WBA and WBC agreed that Valdes, no. 1 contender and Bennie Briscoe, ranked no.2 should meet for the vacant title, Valdes won on points in 15 rounds. Marvelous Marvin Hagler surfaced during the title reign of Hugo Corro, who defeated Valdes in San Remo, Italy on April 22 1978, by unanimous decision. When Hagler began clamoring for a title shot against Corro, Monzon was making movies in Argentina, well set financially, no reason to return to the ring.

Okay. Since no one is actually answering the OP lol. If we use Valadez 2 Monzon as a place holder and take into account a bit of wear and tear I think he’s still too savvy for Hagler in 77-79 Marvellous simply wasn’t ready yet for someone of that level in my opinion but he’d fight through it till the last bell and leave folks asking “what if they met in there primes” like they do today. he’d definitely not embarrass himself he’d just look a step behind.

Regardless of what you think of the infamous out of the ring Monzon, the boxer Monzon was a rare bird...and smarter fighter than most. Not only his ring IQ, but in knowing when to hang 'em up and go out a winner...that put him in a special league with the likes of Marciano, Tunney, Calzaghe and Lewis.

Very true, Carlos did get up to win. In their first fight on June 26 1976, Carlos decked Rodrigo Valdes in round 14 to win by unanimous decision, unifying the WBA and WBC Middleweight title. I saw both fights live on television.

The 4 yrs older, ready to retire Monzon put an ass whipping on Rodrigo...you left that part out. Monzon also displayed his great iron chin and resilience when bouncing back up immediately after feeling that right hand.
