Which champions did Louis's reign prevent?

Schmeling for a second time.

 

Billy Conn (definitely)

Lou Nova (maybe)

Jersey Joe Walcott (definitely)

 

Without Louis Max Schmeling would have regained the title by beating Braddock and become the first man to win the title twice.

 

Yeah, Schmeling would beat Braddock and become the first two time HW champion. He'd probably make a few defenses and lose around 1940, impossible to say against whom.

I guess Conn vs Nova would be the fight of the early 1940s, though someone like Godoy could beat them both. Buddy Baer would have a chance to upset a champion as well.

Assuming that Conn would stay the champion after the war, Walcott should be able to beat past-prime Conn. Then he loses to Charles.

 

I wonder what would’ve transpired if Louis never existed a lot guys where really evenly matched.

 

I'm thankful Joe Louis existed.

 

I think it would have continued similar to how it was going.

Bill Conn, Buddy Baer and Elmer Ray would be strong candidates.

 

The title would have changed hands a few times, and we would almost certainly have had three or more additional lineal champions.

It is quite likely that either Schmeling or Baer becomes a two time champion.

Farr, Pastor, Godoy, Conn, Nova, and even Baer junior, could all theoretically do it with the right breaks.

Later on Bivins and Ray would be in the argument, and you might even see Walcott or Charles get two bites of eh cherry.

Nobody is a particular standout, so it likely depends on which fights get made.

 

Either Schmeling, Baer, or Conn.

 

Baer Jr??? Jethro Bodine was way too young in the late 30's.

 

He might have been well place in the early 40s, especially if the champion was somebody likely to struggle with his size or power.

 

I'd say Jersey Joe, but his record suggests he could be unpredictable at times. So who knows really. Almost beating Joe Louis was a big challenge for him, same as defending against Rocky, who else could really keep Walcott interested and motivated?

Would have been nice to get a rematch w Louis for Baer. The first showing was not a good one for him

 

I think Billy Conn would have held the title for a bit. After the war though he would have been done.

The probably Walcott would have reigned until Charles challenged him.
