Was Lloyd Honeyghan’s victory over Donald Curry at welterweight a flash in the pan victory?

Honeyghan fought a great fight, the best he ever fought as he was disciplined. If he could have retained that discipline for the rest of his time he would have been a problem for anyone. He could show good fundamentals had speed and power.
Curry just didn’t look right that night though, it’s well documented he was struggling at the weight.
I think a tip top Curry would have had trouble with that version of Honeyghan though.

I remember an autumn edition of KO highlighting the danger Honeyghan might present, maybe due to a Curry’s possible disinterest in the fight. Curry should have moved up, and if his people thought McCallum might be too risky, he could have picked an easier lucrative Route through Mathew Hilton to Hagler.

Ray Leonard was advising him to a point, that was the problem.

    LOL.

What advice exactly did Ray give him? And what bound him to take that advice? He had a manager and a trainer and his own self to choose the right path.

Showing up listless to a title defense and getting run out of the ring by a guy who was otherwise pretty unremarkable — even if Lloyd was at his tip-top best he was hardly HoF material — is on Curry. Did Ray advise him not to fight well?

How many times does this have to be explained?
Alot of fighters especially in Curry's time adored Leonard and he had ALOT of influence on them.
Curry was having MASSIVE problems as far back as the Colin Jones fight making weight - he was simply growing out of the welterweight division.
Dave Gorman his manager wanted him to vacate the welterweight division and move up.
Lets remember at this period that Hagler and Curry were considered the best in the sport of boxing.
People started basically wanting the 2 to fight.
Leonard had been retired for years now and while his name was mentioned as a possible opponent for Hagler most dismissed it because of his inactivity.
Whatever reason that only Curry himself knows Curry asked Ray to hook him up with Mike Trainer to give basically advice to his boxing career. Lets remember Trainer works for Ray.
Trainer then advised Curry that he SHOULD NOT move up and STAY at welterweight which caused a huge fight between Gorman and Curry.
So Curry wanting to basically have the same career as Leonard did what Trainer advised.
Curry was walking around at almost lightheavy in between fights.
So Curry once again tried to force himself into welter and you see what happened.
With Curry out of the picture there were no more obstacles barring a Leonard vs Hagler fight.

Curry had never faced anyone with Lloyd's power. up until that fight, the challengers were weak, wimpy, lifeless, uninspiring non entities (Starling, Diaz, Jones, McCrory)

Where in the world did they ever come up with Nino LaRocca?

Quick dispatches of washed up James Green did nothing to change my mind

Lloyd was actually the first REAL challenger and Curry was just not up to it
I really enjoyed the way Lloyd cut loose on the typical control conscience Curry, landing punches to the head with a sickening THUD. These blows tore him up and even if not for the butt/cut, Curry would not have lasted much longer

although Curry was the skillful technician, Floyd was by far the more physical.

    power and aggression trumps skill

simply put, Lloyd was too much fighter for Curry

Doing Welterweight was almost literally killing Curry. This was going to be his last fight at the weight and he was already looking beyond it. Lloyd was a revelation that night and even the best version of Don would have had his hardest night.
Money was Honeyghan's motivator. He knew that if he won against Curry, he would be rich. Had he actually enjoyed Boxing, he would have been a great Fighter. As it was, he was pretty good.

Curry faced plenty of people who hit much harder then Honeyghan don't kid yourself.
I remember that fight like yesterday. I'm like what's wrong with Curry's face- his cheeks are sunken in and he looks dry.
