Not having an ankle injury could have been a major game changer. I didn’t see Baer vs carnera so someone correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t carnera box well in some of the early rounds ?
I always considered Primo a favorite in this fight should he not break his ankle. Such an unfortunate mishap that to an extend tarnished his legacy and broke his boxing career.
Pretty much thought Max dominated. Fun fight to watch because it’s so not normal. Well worth a watch.
No ankle injury in the 1st round and I think Carnera might have been able to keep on his feet a little better but still would have lost to Max Baer, IMHO. I wasn't there, but my Dad was, and I still have his scorecard. He scored by rounds but recorded the knockdowns: "1. Baer (Carnera down thrice.) 2. Baer (Carnera down thrice.) 3. Baer (Carnera down once.) 4. Carnera 5. Baer 6. Baer 7. Carnera 8. Carnera 9. Even 10. Baer (Carnera down twice or thrice. One may have been a slip.) 11. Baer wins by Donovan declared Knockout before the round ended. No 10 count. (Carnera down twice.) Knockdowns may be off. It was hard to be sure at times. Both men were sometimes on the floor at the same time. I don't think Baer was ever knocked down clean. Craziest fight I ever saw."
That's pretty much how the Associated Press saw it. They had: 1. Baer 2. Baer 3. Baer 4. Carnera 5. Baer 6. Even 7. Carnera 8. Baer on top, but lost the round due to a low blow 9. Carnera 10. Baer
Fight begins around the 1:15 mark. Jack Dempsey is the referee. It lasts a while. Jeffries, Willard, Moran, etc. all introduced. This content is protected
The historical revisionism stops here (Primo still gets thrashed)...with Carnera's damaged ankle in their 1934 bout, Baer has able to deck the Italian with the breeze generated by his punches..i.e.,.it didn't take much...but with Carnera's joints inworking condition, then Baer really coldcocks him, i.e., (it's the same Carnera chin...the same Baer power,) this time the ankle will play no part.
