I see Lyle really struggling and most likely dropping decisions to Patsy Perroni, Natie Brown, Tommy Farr, Arturo Godoy, and Billy Conn. Pastor, Braddock, Schmeling, and Walcott likely stop Lyle. Red Burman, Freddie Beshore, Lee Savold, Jimmy Bivins, Tony Musto were all long in the tooth when Louis fought them, but they were all extremely experienced and wouldn’t shock me if they took decisions off Lyle.
Loads of guys, probably. Lyle just didn't beat a lot of good fighters and knocked out very few. I think Lyle versus Simon would be a great fight. An iron jaw like Cesar Brion - good enough to take 3 or 4 rounds off Ezzard Charles in their 1952 fight - would be trouble for him I think. Basically, Louis's competition is laughably underrated by that "Bum of the Month" nonsense, and Lyle is the most overrated fighter on the board, possibly.
I imagine a fair number would beat Lyle. Many already mentioned. I’d also like to give Bob pastor a good chance of winning a decision over Lyle.
Billy Conn Max Schmeling Lou Nova Jersey Joe Walcott Not sure if a shot Jack Sharkey would beat Lyle but a prime one would. Probably a # of others
Lyle is more of a rise to the occasion guy capable of winning a big fight. But he is not the type to go out and get a bunch of consecutive wins against top 10 competition. or to go undefeated against top fighters very long. Lots of fighters like that--but the guys capable of a long reign of successful title defenses is a whole different skillset.
