Always admired how Oleg came back from those knock out losses to score his own big KOs. 99% of fighters brutally KOed never recover enough to have a successful career. When I think of Oleg I remember a totally beaten Rahman holding on to his ankle while lying on the canvas.
I remember at the time that it was openly discussed that he had 20 or so previous fights in the backwaters that went unrecorded before his ‘official’ pro record started. So he may not have been as green as it would appear. His showing in the McCall fight didn’t look like a green novice.
I saw the Tua vs Make match. After round 10 Maskev had it is the bag. Not a top 30 all timer. Maybe top 100, had he fought in other eras he might have accomplished more.
Happy yesterbirthday, Olly! For some reason I wouldn't be shocked to see him release an utterly tone-deaf and self-absorbed video, even at 53 years old inviting Vitali to unretire for one night and "get these hands" should the Kievan mayor survive the conflict at home in the days ahead. Based on past interviews, Maskaev probably still can't let go the idea of that long sought-after rematch as it were from the amateurs. He spent the better part of his career lobbying in vain for it.
Vitale has bigger fish to fry. But considering Oleg is a Russian citizen, Vitali could tell him to put on a uniform and march his happy ass down to Kyiv and they can settle it on the battlefield.
I think of him as an overachiever, in even holding the WBC belt for a little while, but if he only had a chin and he had no recovery powers once seriously hurt.
