Has there ever been a short British heavyweight that has that peekaboo, come forward get inside style? I can name plenty of fighters like that in the heavyweight division, but none British. If you can’t think of any, who is the best in your opinions? I can only really think of like Cooper or Chisora
I don't know whether they fought in the peekaboo style, but Erskine and Beckett were British, heavyweight contenders, and short.
a L-HW cum HW. during a time when fighters just automatically knew they were going to compete at Higher weights in numerous 'Catchweight' meets.
I can assure you it wasn’t Cooper. He was 6’ 1 1/2” and fought ramrod straight. Only time he encountered any peekaboo style, was when he was flattened in 4 by Floyd in 1966.
Probably the closest you’ll find are: Bruce Woodcock (was scheduled to fight for the vacant title after Joe Louis retired), who was about 6 feet tall. Not exactly peek-a-boo but did bob and weave some from what little film I’ve seen. John L. Gardner, who was British and Euro champ and at one time was slated to fight Muhammad Ali, that didn’t happen and he got blitzed by Michael Dokes. He was 5-11 I think. You could call him a dime-store Jerry Quarry but I’d ask for change if you put a dime on the counter.
