based on beating past it and much smaller men. Holmes' word can be taken with a pinch of salt, and when did Holmes also fight in this era?. there are just as big and bigger men and punchers around today. and durable. that hw era wasnt strong, the back end of the 70s, early 80s, plenty of fighters today would have KO'd Old Young, Norton and Lyle. He got eaten alive by a much smaller Michael Spinks. Hes overated!!!! take of the glasses Noel. offensively he had some serious firepower, everything else just no, not good all round. lack of conditioning, not well schooled, just a naturally big guy with good offensive skills.
I think after he ran out of ideas he would lose to Fury, Uysk, Joshua, Wilder, Hrgovic, Whyte, Parker, Ruiz Jr, Hunter, Joyce, most top class amatuers with accomplished skills and experience . he could probably would lose to chisora, as chisoras proven toughness and gameness is top notch. he has a small chance to KO a few of them earlier on. but all these fighters have come through adversity and won, or ended the fight with on their feet and still fighting. they are better conditioned, tougher and more game, cooney showed bravery but not extreme grit. like i say a big man with a big punch and nice punching selection body to head, decent combo puncher. just not tough enough, fit enough or clever enough. its not like he was a great strategist or well schooled, or he did ever show accomplished backfoot movement, defence or holding, didnt win decisisons as a big man. . Hed be capable of beating Helenius, Wach, Martin, Washington etc. hoovering around 12-20 id say. could he beat Luis Ortiz? he liked beating on older men, but ortiz is a bigger well schooled and tougher old man! if Cooney was european he wouldnt of got the oppurtunities he did, because America was the hotspot for boxing back then.
Thanks for the response but i just do not rate the current crop of heavyweights apart from the top three. Can`t see any of the others lasting more than ten rounds with Holmes as Cooney did
Larry Holmes is not a big puncher, plenty would see the distance with him nowadays, not saying most of them wont get schooled. the current top 10 is bunch of fighters with iron chins or great will. Also Holmes who isnt a devasting puncher, probably went into that night where he just couldnt stop the man infront of him, props to cooney but he was never winning or ever going to win. as we see in any fight, sometimes a top fighter does not stop their opponent but they give them such a hardcore beating they destroy them. chisora for one has been beaten to bits numerous of times and came back fighting, cooney just got washed!!!!!! Any of the fighters i said would beat him, would beat his 3 best opponents, the fighters he beat were past it!
We obviously disagree but i will go to my grave believing Cooney would beat most of todays heavyweights ,so take care and i appreciate your comments
ASSUMING he gets proper training, proper (ahem) medications, and is committed to fighting and not drinking and carousing with his buddies, I see Cooney being competitive with todays' HWs. Not saying he beats them all, but does well. Most likely to KO him are Wilder and AJ. Most likely to win UD's are Usyk. The rest, including Tyson "Love Handles" Fury, he could possibly defeat.
I dunno. Maybe a universe where someone takes advantage of fat Fury's conditioning and throw some body shots at him? Does any heavie throw body punches anymore? Yeah british bum, Whyte calls himself the bodysnatcher but when did you ever see him attack anyone with bodyyshots that made you take notice? He just mainly swings wildly for the head with his left hook. Not saying Cooney would definitely beat Fury with his crunching left hook to the body but it would be something that no-one else has used against him.
The fighters of today are much younger than Gerry Cooney is used to fighting, no more ancient relics like Ken Norton and Jimmy Young, Lol.
