I always remember in that fight i believe it was the 6th round ? where Tapia boxed beautifully and at the end of the round. Did his Pernell Whitaker impression making Ayala miss a handful of punches in a row.

87-84 Pendleton

I wanted to see their first fight as that one was a draw, but i couldn't find any footage so i had make due with their rematch.

This was pretty entertaining fight by two good honest pros, who had very up and down careers. And funnily enough both men ended their careers with 26 losses each. Pendleton at this time was pretty hot and Bramble was still trying to rebuild his career, after the devastating loss to Rosario.

I thought Bramble had the better of fight early on by being the aggressor, but by the 5th round the fight had turned around. And then it was Pendleton being the aggressor outpunching Bramble. From then on i thought Pendleton pretty much controlled the fight, although it was still competitive but Pendleton for me was certainly having the better of it.

Pendleton come out for the 10th round very fast and aggressive, and after having a very good 1st half of the round. The ref halts the contest so the doctor can have a look at the cut on Brambles eye, and the doctor decides Bramble can no longer continue.

Overall it was an interesting fight to watch, i do enjoy the Lightweight 80s era so many interesting battles.

 

How that one lost out I'll never know.

 

Not as high profile is my guess.

I saw this fight out there and when I saw the two combatants I knew it was a guaranteed smoker. And they didn't let me down.

Round 1: 10-9 Bramble

Round 10: Doctor stops fight due to cut over Bramble's right eye

Total through 9 completed rounds: 87-87 Even (actual scores: 86-85 Bramble, 87-85 and 89-82 both for Pendleton)

If one thinks I was too over the top with the Even rounds, then one needs to watch the fight. You won't be sorry. This was phone-booth warfare. I did not agree with announcer Tim Ryan or that last score. Ryan stated he had Pendleton comfortably ahead, but I saw nothing wrong with the first 2 scores because this was such a close fight. I look at the whole chess board as its unfolding and I saw Pendleton throwing the most but missing a lot and also Bramble catching a lot on his arms, whereas Bramble was incredibly accurate with his shots. A damn good fight.

 

I've not actually seen that fight before I'll add it to my watchlist.

 

I agree with you I was a bit bemused by the commentators, thinking Pendleton won all the early rounds comfortably aswell.

But I do think Pendleton, was the better fighter after 5th round.

Just out of curiosity have you ever seen the 1st fight ?

 

Bramble always brought it. Joy to watch him fight.

Decidedly unheralded here. I did a thread on him a few years back and most of the posters just sniffed at him for being third-rate. Short memories or very young, that's for sure. Entirely warranted or not, he was at one point ranked third pound for pound behind only Hagler and Curry in KO Magazine's rankings in 1986.

 

I’d really like to see Bramble’s fight with Bubba Busceme, 10-round MD in 1982 in Atlantic City.

This was a great scrap probably one of the most underrated Welterweight fights of the 90s, funnily enough with both fighters being from Detroit and Maryland. It had a Leonard vs Hearns feel to it, but the only difference was in this fight. The Kronk fighter was the aggressor, and the fighter from Maryland was the boxer role reversal from Leonard/Hearns.

Also just to note i know for a fact i've seen Coley vs ODLH, but i virtually have no memory of Coley in that fight. So for me this was like watching Coley for the first.

Anyway onto the fight Coley started off really well in the first 2 rounds, boxing nicely circling the ring with some great ring generalship, whilst landing the occasional solid counter right hand. As Carr was unable to close the distance and was outboxed.

Carr was able to turn the fight around after the 2nd round, by closing the distance and landing some good body shots. The body shots for me are what turned the fight in Carr's favour, and i felt he had a good spell between 3-6. With round 5 being a standout round with some great exchanges in the last minute from both men.

To Coley's credit he decided to switch up his tactics, and in rounds 7 and 8 he stood in the pocket with Carr. Actually winning the fight on the inside with some good handspeed and combinations outpunching Carr, although Coley was badly hurting in the last 10 seconds of the 8th round. For me there's no way that was enough to steal the round for Carr as Coley dominated the round.

Round 9 oh boy this round was something special, this was for certain the best round of the entire fight and a ROTY candidate. As both men went back and forth exchanging punches with the momentum swinging back and forth. Coley's legs seemed to be gone but somehow he stood up to the punishment, and was able mount a pretty strong rally himself while basically being out on his feet. This round was close but i felt Carr edged it as his punches seemed to have more of an effect on Coley.

The last 3 rounds were a bit more tactical, with Coley once again going back to what he was doing earlier in the fight. Boxing/Moving Circling. He seemed to take a round off in the 10th round, probably wanting to recover from the hectic 9th round. But i feel like Coley was able to successfully outbox Carr quite clearly in the last 2 rounds to earn a draw on my card.

The commentators were convinced Coley had clearly won the fight, based on his ring generalship and boxing. I wouldn't say i disagree that you could have Coley winning. But i certainly don't think Coley won it clearly.

Overall it was a very fun fight to watch and a great contrast of styles, Coley really impressed me with his boxing skills. And Carr as always a very fun fighter to watch with some nice skills of his own.

Speaking of Rafael Williams his fight with Pernell Whitaker is missing too. Pernell was dropped once in that fight.
