I've massive respect for the man. The more I've learnt about him, a lot in parts on here from respected poster's, the more I admire him for actually becoming the heavyweight champion of the world. I mean, look at the world in the time he actually reigned, talk about out to get you! Is he a an ATG in your eyes? Overrated. Underrated?
I think he is an all time great, and underrated by many. One thing's apparent, he was VERY impressive, in his prime, in his time!
Great fighter who accomplished many things, winning the HW championship of the world in an era of mob rule and racism. I lost to a man who could not beat me, will forever be spoken about...
He’s well deserving of ATG recognition. Fought pretty much everyone in his day and a lot of great wins. Not much else I can say about him.
I love him, I think he fought terrific competition in his pre-title years and I think he was in that rare group of fighters that moved in a different gear like a Whitaker, a Mayweather, a Ward even a Hopkins that simply frustrated others and took them out of their games .,., he was a great fighter without question .. as far as what he lived through , start with this .. he was the child of former slaves .. get your head around that ...
As a fighter, he has one of the deepest resumes, in the history of the heavyweight division. He also has the same issue as Larry Holmes. It is a quantity over quality resume, and he perhaps missed some chances, to add game changing quality to the resume. Underrated today, because most people don't understand his opposition. As a man, the argument is more complex. He might have been the most intelligent man to hold a heavyweight title, before the Klitscko's got into the argument. He was vain, irrepressible, and selfish, and left a trail of chaos, both as a champion and as a man! He was also a victim, and the brutal campaign against him, seems to have caused him significant mental damage. I guess that the least that we have to say for him, is that the antagonists that he was up against, were worse than he was!
That's how I see it. Rather funny how people give those two all kinds of praise and favor them in many h2h matchups, but apparently to some people Johnson was a scrub. He's one of the only true defensive masters at HW and could probably pull off a lot of surprise upsets in a time machine or if someone copied his style and adapted it to modern times.
A misunderstood talent who was the #1 heavyweight around for a while, but never proved vs. mature versions of Langford, Jeanette, or Mcvey. Never crossed path with Wills or Dempsey either though those fights would have been out of his prime. These fights would be all be the best he fought as champion or post Willard. I'd pick all of these men vs Johnson's fought his opponents, wouldn't you? I seen him as over rated in a boxing sense and under rated for his personality. Title reign was not good, nor did to have clean results. Style wise he came up with his own brand of boxing using defense and wrestling / clinching combined with quick blows the back to defense and wrestling. Hitting and holding augmented with fast reflexes in his hands. Simply put he beat his man to the punch. Very relaxed in the ring, while rating the other is an under rated aspect of his game. A smart man in and out of the ring.
