The Ali who faced Holmes versus prime Butterbean. 12 rounds. (Inspired by the thread about the worst showings of lineal champions.)

    Who wins, and why?

I think that there were so many fighters left in Muhammad Ali in 1980 to beat Butterbean, at least in the same way that Holmes defeated Butterbean in his farewell fight.

Ali couldn`t even punch a speedbag before the Holmes fight, he was like an ice berg melting, it was tragic, he should have been nowhere a ring by then, he was a wreck.

Probably takes back and lays on the ropes for most of the fight.

Ali was just not physically fit to even be in that ring, Ali from the Berbick fight puts a clinic on Butterbean and stops TKO him anywhere from the 7th-12th round.

So you think Butterbean would win, or what?

Butter B would pound away at Ali, Muhammad had nothing left at all. Sad to say, I see a corner or the ref pulling him out.

Agreed. The "highlights" of the Ali vs Holmes fight still bring me to tears every time i watch them.
Ali was a living punching bag at the time.

The Ali who faced Holmes would get destroyed by Butterbean. He couldn't even move, throw punches, or do anything. He was not fit to be in the ring.

I’d still pick Ali at least by decision.
