I went through the annual ratings. You can look at them too. They’re online. They were not in The Ring annuals before fighting Duran.

I often look at the ring annual ratings.they were ranked at jr welterweight not lightweight.they came down in weight to fight Duran.

I was checking 140. If you have the monthly rankings to upload, I’d like to see it.

It looks like Brooks fits into the top 5 moving up or down category. I’ll add him. I don’t think Mamby and Thompson do.

    For the love of god.
Duran beat Thompson in 1973.Thompson ranked 5 at jr welter in 1973
Duran beat ortiz 1975.ortiz was ranked 7 at jr welter in 1975
Duran beat Bizarro in 1976.Bizarro was ranked 5 at jr welter in 1975
Duran beat Brooks in 1978.Brooks was 4 at jr welter in 1977
Duran beat Mamby in 1976.Mamby was ranked 10 at jr welter in 1976

There you have it.The end of year rankings for those fighters just before Duran fought them or the end of year ranking a matter of months after he fought them.I now admit that Robertson had exited the rankings a few years earlier.

Obviously those guys aren’t on the same level as Canelo.but mayweather made Canelo come down to fight him at a catchweight. If you are going to give mayweather huge credit for the win over Canelo, then you can’t discredit Duran for fighting guys who came down in weight also.As the rankings indicate they were clearly world class.

I’m done with this childish argument.

I'll go through it one by one.

Duran beat Thomspon in 73 at 135. Thompson did not make the 72 annual. He probably made the top ten at 140 before fighting Duran, but I dont know if he made the top 5 which is what he'd need for the "top 5 moving up or down" category.

Duran beat Ortiz in 75 @135. He finished 74 at 6 @140. This gives me no reason to edit my list.

Bizarro looks to have been 5 at 140 when they fought at 135. I'll add him.

Already added Brooks. Previously addressed Mamby.

Sort of the point of this thread. Duran almost deserves to be ranked ahead of Mayweather and Pac, but almost doesn't cut it.

Didn’t you say at the start of the thread he didn’t beat anybody ranked 6-10.and when you mentioned top 5 fighters you missed some of the guys in the top 5.

I used to think Duran was overrated also because I didn’t recognise some of the names he beat during his prime and he lost to some big names. But then I did more research and found out that his opposition was much better than I had first thought and a lot of his losses were out of his weight division.
I do genuinely think he outpointed Iran Barkley by 2 points though.and His performances at lightweight were unbelievable he beat people up even more impressively than Julio Cesar chavez did.Nothing like a tough as nails warrior with enormous skill.

Mayweather and Pacquiao have amazing resumes and were all time greats years before their careers ended.Pacquiao’s rise through the divisions was amazing.I’ve been following boxing as a die hard fan and I never once expected Mayweather to lose a fight. What I will say is Duran is not overrated but Mayweather and Pacquiao are underrated.I don’t think fighters from recent history get enough credit. Some great fighters from the past get overrated(Dempsey,Zarate,j Johnson, etc).
Duran is not one of the overrated fighters.I was pointing out some of his victories that you missed I’m not saying he is way better than Floyd or Pacquiao I think it’s really close among the three.

I meant 6-10 in his division. I threw the top 5 guys who moved up or down in a separate category bc it gets messy like Oscar being dead again Pacquiao or Marquez looking outsized against Mayweather.

Duran did enough to deserve the comparison. It would be pointless with someone like Benitez bc he didn’t do enough compared to Duran, May, and Pac.

Yes, Canelo would have had a significant weight advantage over Benitez.

He also had a significant weight advantage over Floyd.

    Yet it meant nothing.

He didn’t try to utilise it in any way.

As a JMW, Benitez would have weighed in at 154 on the day.

Against Canelo, Floyd weighed in at 150.5.

The weight was irrelevant, as Canelo was beaten to the punch by a superior boxer who had a speed and reach advantage.

So why would a weight advantage have come into play against Benitez?

Benitez was a superior boxer to Canelo, who was also bigger and faster.

If he wouldn’t press Floyd, why would he have pressed Benitez?

We’re not taking Canelo’s worst performance.

We are putting the JMW versions of him under the spotlight.

We’re looking at the versions of him who fought Floyd, Trout and Lara etc.

He couldn’t touch Floyd and he barely beat Trout and Lara.

Yet according to you, that same guy would have been too much for Benitez.

    No.

There’s no logic in your thinking.

Why couldn’t an offensive Benitez also have backed Canelo up?

    Benitez was sloppier than Floyd?

    He was labelled ‘El Radar’

    You are talking nonsense.

The stylistic match up would have favoured Benitez.

Go watch the Hamsho fight. Benitez never beat quality operators who were Canelo’s size.

Go and watch the Mayweather fight. Canelo never beat anyone the quality of Benitez, and the only time he fought one, he lost every round.

    Ha!

Hamsho threw the kitchen sink at Benitez.

He pressured him and roughed him up on the inside.

    He didn’t let him breath.

This is where you let yourself down the most.

    Read carefully:

A young Canelo DID NOT fight like that.

If Canelo had fought like an extremely tough and durable Hamsho, he’d have fared much much better against Floyd.

    Yet he didn’t.

    It wasn’t his style.

If he sat back off of Floyd who had zero power, then there’s absolutely no reason to think that he’d have fought Benitez like Hamsho did.

You’ve no idea what you’re talking about.
