Probably yes. The bar is lower than one might expect.

 

The only time Fury has defended his belt he went life and death with Wilder in the 3rd fight. Which tarnishes his initial 2 performances against Wilder which were masterclasses.

Chisora already beaten by the time Fury got to him.

Should of had a DQ against Cunningham.

The standout name on the resume is Wlad, and although not prime, was still number 1.

Add the failed drug tests and it gets a bit dicey.

After saying all that, if you put him against any HW in the past in a hypothetical match up, it would be hard to bet against him.

 

He'll likely get in, even with his paper thin no-name resume.

 

Cunningham was 36 and 44 lbs lighter. Grossly exaggerating shows that you have no confidence in your position.

McDerm was domestic level with domestic level wins and losses, Fury fought him at 21.

Wallin schooled Breazeale 10-2 in America, who was a Wilder and AJ world title challenger and beat better fighters than McDerm. Wallin only has a loss to Fury in 24 fights and wasn't stopped.

Cunningham was a 2x cruiserweight champion, KO'd Huck in Germany, beat Wlod in Poland and G. Jones. Robbed several times (Adamek 2, Wlod 1, Glazkov) and took Mansour's 0 post-Fury. Only stopped by Fury in 40 fights.

Their performances against Fury are a credit to them, more than say Chisora, Hammer or Johnson, who were useless.

 

Then Vitali took Chisora 12 rounds & got spat on.

A less than stellar performance out of shape and in 1st gear against Sokolowski doesn't erase his performance against Fury or the Breazeale win. He was blatantly ducked by Whyte and was in the conversation for AJ interim fight opponents. So he's a solid win, he has far more about him than Chisora, Hammer or Johnson.

 

The 1st fight was hardly a "masterclass" getting dropped twice and almost stopped isn't a masterclass.

I think your definition of a masterclass is different to mine, I'm thinking Wright vs Tito for example.

 

Well, Chisora had really good performances against Whyte, beat Scott, Johnson, Takam and Price, and of course suffered an unfortunate decision against Helenius. To my memory though, yeah, for sure Wallin>>Hammer and Johnson. It's not about the Sokolowski fight to me, it's just that I don't rate Brezeale at all. I think Solowski would have a good chance at beating Brezeale.

 

Thin by what standard? It's a genuine question.

There were far fewer styles and body types at HW in the distant past (no southpaws, no snipers, no SHW's, mainly cruisers and sub-cruisers)

You can't compare the boxing politics of long-gone eras to the boxing politics of today (4 belt era, rematch clauses, cross promo barriers etc.)

You can't compare the heavyweight division to fly, bantam, middle etc. for a multitude of reasons

The only fighters you can compare Fury's record to with any accuracy are heavyweights from his era. And in that regard, Fury easily has the best and deepest record. Wlad is an interesting one because he had far more B/C level wins and had great longevity but lacked the dominant elite wins of Fury and lost a bunch of times, frequently to massive underdogs. That's where it becomes subjective.
