And yet, Canelo didn't fancy it. Sergey still almost - arguably - beat GGG, Jacobs and Charlo. He'd take Canelo's counters and the workrate would make a drained Canelo look awful down the stretch.
Golovkin was the reason HBO was dying. They banked on him as their 'next Manny', and he was never that. A guy with two or three goofy catchphrases in English who stood off David freakin' Lemieux when his big moment came. Strange basket for the network's boxing arm to store its eggs in when trying to get the brand back on track after the excesses of the Haymon era.
I mean, all the female doggin' between Canelo fans and Golovkin fans has been so especially tiresome precisely because neither fighter is truly top-tier. At least Floyd's and Pac's fanboys were female doggin' over great fighters, which made all the incessant quarrelling somewhat understandable. Canelo and Golovkin are just very good fighters in an era hurtin' for candidates for greatness. Eh? He won the 2nd in pretty much every observer's eyes.
The most important thing to know is that he threatened many American fans and that certain demographic used to dominating boxing as a poor man's sport, before it was actually international, when international was basically just like the ''World Series'' where only Americans play, just with some British and Mexicans involved here and there. All of a sudden the American world was rocked when hordes of Eastern Euros and Eurasians climbed over the iron curtain with high level amateur training and started imposing themselves on the sport. Turns out the ''privilege'' propaganda was a load of BS and mean streets didn't only exist in Philly and Mehico City. Shock and awe followed. And Golovkin took on the glamour MW division, with a power punching style that seemed at odds with his creepy baby face and average stature. He was up against it from the beginning for the reasons mentioned and was soon ducked habitually. Everyone he fought, title contenders and former champs, they all became bums overnight. He was ducking Ward at 168 and being mean to his Canelo fanboy coach. Golovkin was officially ducked by: 1. MW champ Sturm 2. MW champ Cotto (who chose Geale, former Golovkin opponent instead) 3. MW champ Saunders (who admitted on camera he would age him a few years to slow him down) 4. MW champ Canelo (who dropped the belt to age him and PED up some more) 5. MW champ Canelo after second fight 6. MW contender Eubank Jr. (who pulled at the last minute, which led to Brook basically filling in) 7. MW future champ Barker's manager (manager refused the fight, Barker didn't know much about Golovkin at the time, his manager knew this was a killer) He was likely ducked by 1. Martinez (Macklin took the GGG title fight in the period Martinez was still active/champ) 2. Floyd (who taunted that he would win easily but wouldn't take the 154 catch weight fight Golovkin offered) 3. Froch (who taunted that he would win but wouldn't take the fight - Froch's weight narrative is different to Golovkin's so this duck isn't 100%) 4. Ward was taunting Golovkin, like with Froch the weight narrative has two sides so we can't be sure exactly what happened behind the scenes. Notable and entertaining demolitions: - Macklin. Golovkin broke his ribs with one punch. - Geale. Former champ, never stopped. Golovkin KO'd him early. - Rosado. Tough and good boxer was destroyed. - Proksza. This guy's career was basically ruined by that fight, I think. Brutal take out. - Brook. Brook and team had a lot of cockiness, were set to rob Golovkin at Wembley. Brook got his orbital terminated. - Murray. Tough contender even Groves couldn't stop. Golovkin was the first to stop him. Best performances showing skillset: - Canelo I, comfortable decision robbery. - Lemieux. Dangerous puncher Canelo ducked, broken down with boxing clinic and stopped. - Stevens. KO puncher wanted to put GGG in grave. Golovkin gave him the ghost face then beat him up slowly like he was nothing. - Jacobs. Massive Jacobs, hyped by many, cheated on the weight, was dropped and outstruck over 12. Funniest stoppages: - Monroe Jr. Tried to get up too slow but ref made him verbally quit. - Rubio. Golovkin hit him with a top down trick shot. Ultimately Golovkin is a smart and technical fighter with big power in both hands, an excellent chin (never dropped or stopped) and endurance too. He would likely beat any of the nostalgia American fighters who were clearly not as refined. But for reasons mentioned, he will be ranked as low as people can get away with in the ATG discussion.
GGG had all of the great attributes you’d want in a fighter… chin, power, good in ring iq, and killer instinct. I’d say he’s top 10 all time in the division (closer to 10)… he unfortunately wasted way too many years in the amateurs and was avoided for quite some time in the pros. I do not think he would rank higher on any list over Monzon, Hagler, Walker, Greb, Ketchel, SRR, Hopkins, and Burley. I personally feel he was blatantly robbed in the 1st Canelo fight and should have gotten an SD or at least a draw in the second one. Great fighter who was always fun to watch.
This post represents why I respect the **** out of Kell Brook so much. Welterweight Kell had the balls to challenge close to prime GGG. RESPECT
Wow a natural welter with a little life left in him destroys a natural light welter with absolutely nothing left in him. Brook ducked Bradley, that's all you need to know.
charlo, adamaes and jacobs clearly beat him, ggg lost but got a robbery after canelo snatched his soul in the 2nd fight
