Would Calzaghe Ko Tommy Hearns?

I honestly believe prime JC stops any version of Tommy. He is just the naturally bigger man and would cause Tommy to gas.

 

Hopkins was past it but was still an elite fighter. Pfp even if im correct. So it doesn't make sense to discredit Calzaghe's win over him. Kessler was an elite smw too

 

Reasonable assessment although Hearns while being past prime defeated Virgil hill at 175

 

Again, Calzaghe doesn't have the size or physicality of a Barkley and the Kinchen fight happened 5 months after Hearns was viscously stopped by Barkley. Hearns was originally supposed to fight Obelmejias for the WBA 168 strap but he pulled out and the Kinchen fight was sanctioned last minute for the lowly vacant WBO belt.

It would turn into a technical fight because that slapping **** isn't going to work against Hearns, Calzaghe was there to be hit and got countered plenty, he won his fights with speed and by overwhelming his opponents with slaps from all directions, he would only throw proper punches a single shot at a time. Hearns had a significantly longer reach and his timing with the jab and right hand would keep Joe honest and disrupt his rhythm. Joe would eat that jab from Hearns all night, I can honestly even envision a flash knockdown or two by Hearns since Joe would lose his balance throwing his signature million slaps move which would be a sucker for Hearns right hand.


Also, LOL at Calzaghe being an ATG. An ATG in what sense, he's the GOAT at 168 but that's not really saying much, Andre Ward and Canelo have less than a third of Calzaghe's championship fights and have cases being rated above him despite having success in other weight classes. He won and defended the lowly WBO belt in the 90's enough times for it to be finally legitimized in the early 00's then beat a one handed Kessler and 2 old men, big deal.

 

Calzaghe doesn't have Barkley's size ?? The size difference between the two is insignificant imo and Calzaghe was naturally bigger. Barkley had 1 inch on him. Thats about it. Calzaghe was about 6 foot.

I dont see why he wouldn't overwelm Hearns. Calzaghe was never one to get kept honest and at the higher weights Hearns doesn't have that kind of huge power though he could still crack. He would pressure hearns and outwork him, maybe even stop him. Calzaghes output was insane and lets not act like Hearns has the chin to eat dozens of punches a round. He wont give Calzaghe zero respect or anything, especially if its the Calzaghe before his last big hand injury. Calzaghe had enough power to stop Hearns before his brittle hands gave up on him.

 

I meant style which is correct. Barkley was built like a tank, they're both two completely different fighters. He wouldn't overwhelm Hearns like that because timing beats speed. A 78 year old Hopkins negated a lot of those slaps and won rounds off of Joe due to superior timing. There's levels to this boxing game, a fully prepared and motivated Hearns is the one to beat, possibly stop any version of Calzaghe.

He really was. I saw it up-close in a leisure centre. Never HEARD a punch like that, like a shotgun echo’ing, when he flattened this guy with a left. It was scary.

Andy Flute said he hit harder than Benn. Sparred both in 96.

I think the weight-making weakened him, poor nutrition, and holding back after breaking his hand on Reid’s head in the 3rd or 4th of their fight. He couldn’t even do bag work for the last 10 years of his career, just light pads and double-end ball, no full contact sparring anymore. The hand was F-ooooked.

 

(Calzaghe was a much bigger man than Iran Barkley, Barkley was a big dude but was making 160 many times a year through the 80s when they were same-day weigh-ins…. Joe had to starve himself dry to make 168 from around 99 onwards and then pigged out on cakes and sweets for 24-28hrs; you’d have to take a limb for him to make 160)

 

Roy Jr and Hopkins put Calzaghe on his backside in the first round.

In all honesty, Magoo, I have never rated Virgil Hill very highly and believe Calzaghe would have beaten him too.

Calzaghe would be the favourite, because Hearns was better at lower weight classes.

But the issue I have with people assuming Calzaghe wins automatically. Is when did Calzaghe ever fight someone who hit as hard as Hearns ?

Even at Super Middleweight Hearns still had power, and Calzaghe was hit at will by right hands by Woodhall, Reid, and was even dropped heavily by Kabary Salem with a right hand.

I'm not so sure Calzaghe would be able to take, flush right hands often from Hearns. Like he did from the others I mentioned above.

Like I said Calzaghe would be the favourite, but I wouldn't bet on him winning. And I'm quite surprised people assume Calzaghe would win so easily, and some even suggesting would win early. My question to them people is based on Calzaghe beating whom at Super Middleweight ?

 

Ko him? He wouldn't even beat Hearns.

More of a chance of Hearns stopping him than he stopping Hearns IMO.
