I've been rewatching a few of this guy's fights, and my god what a puncher he was. Didn't even look like he put much effort into his shots, and his opponents would crash to the canvas. Sad what happened to him. He deserves to be better known, if not as a great fighter than as a tremendous HW puncher. This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
I was a fan. The main problem he had was that he lacked the killer instinct to go with the punch. I remember reading that he got his ring name, "Hunter," because he had never gone hunting in his life, so his friends took him one time, and he accidentally shot his buddy (minor wound). Still, a lot of people thought he beat Chag, and he should have been the one whose career moved forward.
Wow. I missed the news that he killed himself. Sad state of affairs. His career kinda fizzled out but he had the power and chin to win on any given night. RIP.
I liked Virchis. He was avoided in his time, he needed a win over an American heavyweight like McCline, Barrett or Williamson to raise his profile. I remember wanting to see Virchis vs Peter, both were feared punchers at the time.
He reminded me a bit of Foreman, the way he'd flatline opponents with cuffing nonchalant blows. Had he possessed Foreman's jab and framing abilities he'd have been a scary proposition for anyone.
