We can both agree that Caenlo has never looked close to as bad as Benitez on that night.

And as much as it pains you, at some point you must accept that Canelo has beaten more talented slick boxers types and boxer movers than just about anyone fighting today.

    NoNeck,

That has no relevance to what we’re discussing.

It has no relevance to a Canelo-Benitez fight.

The young, pre-prime version of Canelo who fought Floyd, Trout, Shane, Rhodes and Hatton etc, wouldn’t have fought Benitez like Hamsho did.

    He didn’t fight like that.

Now you saw him stand off of an elite boxer with speed in the Floyd fight.

So there’s no reason to think that he’d have approached a Benitez fight any differently, around the same period.

    It doesn’t pain me.

    Why would it pain me?

Are you implying that I’m a hater?

    No.

I’m just telling you that your opinions aren’t based on reality.

The fights are there for all to see.

    Go and rewatch them.

He was a young, pre-prime JMW, and not the fighter that we see today.

Whelp, he looked bad against Floyd but logged one of his best wins to date in his next outing. Might’ve had something to do with Money May.

He barely beat Trout and Lara.

He simply wasn’t the fighter that we see before us today.

Of course it had something to do with Floyd.

    Floyd was a special fighter.

For a brief period, Benitez was too.

If Canelo was a young, pre-prime counter puncher who didn’t really press any of his skilled opponents back then at JMW, then why are we looking at what Hamsho did to Benitez at a higher weight?

    Canelo didn’t fight like Hamsho.

Again, if Canelo wouldn’t pressure Floyd, there’s absolutely no reason to believe that he’d have approached a fight against Benitez any differently.

Like Floyd, Benitez was also a master technician with great skills and speed.

The likelihood is: Benitez would have dictated the pace and controlled the fight.

If Canelo respected Floyd’s, size, speed and skills, then logic states that he’d have respected Benitez’ too.

You’re trying to sell me a version of Canelo which simply didn’t exist back then.

You like comparing statistics, but you never compare any styles.

What’s interesting about Benitez is how his best wins were at 140 and 147 and he barely won either of those fights.

Benitez must have been the top guy at WW at this time, since had beaten Palomino (in a fight I don't feel was very close). But this performance by Duran was still tremendous. Skip 140 to face such a good fighter and then completely pick him apart.

What a division WW was there for a few years: Leonard, Hearns, Duran, Benitez, Palomino and Cuevas.

He beat Duran at JMW and gave a prime Hearns a decent fight.

Before his father killed his career, he was a special talent.

You're right. The Benitez fight was in January of 79, so Benitez was number 1 and lineal when when Duran fought Palomino. I had it in my head forever that Duran beat Palomino for a belt and that Benitez had moved up already. I guess not.
