I saw a report from an analytics company the other day. They'd analysed Warrington's likely trajectory based on his recent fight record and concluded that within 3 fights a cannon will be aimed from his corner at the opponent and he'll be fired out the start of each round wearing a steel helmet. Should he miss Sean O Hagan will shoot his oppoent and Terry O Connor will rule this as a TKO.
A tree with three branches on it, one with Kid Galahad hanging on, another that an old Spanish guy who has defeats to numerous Brits has just fell onto and the highest branch currently being occupied by Josh Warrington as he hides from Lara. I get what you're saying but it's not just Josh's style that annoys people, we could live with that, it's the whole package, the dropping of the belt, then going after it again, the Leeds rubbish and everything else, when you throw it all together you can quite easily see why people don't warm to him.
Exactly this. I was happy to enjoy the ride and I'm not so precious about a fighter's style, or their fanbase, the route they take or any one thing. With Josh it's been a cumulative effect, but the Lara rematch was probably the point where I was finding it difficult to stomach. If you're going to invest in a 'narrative' of the little guy made good, then it doesn't help for him to shaft, or rather butt another little guy made good. It would've been nice if he could've delivered a clean performance in this fight with Kiko, but instead its the same old story and by this point no matter how loud the Kaiser Chiefs are played its getting a little thin.
I get completely that people can’t warm to him. He looked stupid dropping the belt, letting it get passed between two guys he’s fought previously and deciding to have another go because he thought it would be a much easier fight (which it was.) I get he rubs people up the wrong way with football stuff and all that shite. I’ve heard that his Dad has said they don’t want the Lara fight, however every Warrington interview I heard (including Bunce’s podcast the week of the fight) Warrington seem to be begging for it. My point supposed to be mainly about his style in response the thread. He rubs people up the wrong way but at the end of the day he isn’t unbeatable as has been shown.
For the longest time, I thought Lee Selby would beat Josh Warrington. Come the week of the fight, it occurred to me that Warrington was the rising tide in the matchup and that it was much more likely to be his night. After that, I fancied him to outhustle and defeat Frampton, who I always thought rather overrated in some quarters. At that point, I had a considerable amount of respect for the guy (which had been building as far back as the night he scored his first professional stoppage against a fighter I'd viewed at very close quarters in Samir Mouneimne), albeit with some minor reservations in regard to his decision to egg on a notoriously toxic fanbase (LUFC) instead of urging it to lend its support without spitting at his opponents and pelting them with rocks. It's what has happened since then — the conduct you describe, in addition to he and his father's apparent determination to not grant Lara a shot while still calling himself a champion — that grates on me and causes me to reconsider the esteem I held him in. At some point after Frampton, they became much too big for their britches, figured they were more important than they were, and it's a shame, because he had a great underdog/overachiever story. Now he's trying to return to the underdog/overachiever role (see his embarrassing post-fight interview on Saturday), and it just doesn't wash at this stage.
Warrington isn't ducking Lara. He already showed he was willing to fight him again. Now other people may not want him to fight Lara but I don't think Warrington is against that fight.
Illegal, not careless, use of the head can shorten and ruin careers. Warrington has been more dependent on it from the Lee Selby fight onwards. I don't put all the blame on Warrington because increasingly weak Referees allow him to get away with it. Old Harry Gibbs would have thrown him out on Saturday and rightly so.
I think they thought the first fight was a one off, so they rematched him and found at that it wasn’t, but got a lucky escape with the headbutts/cuts. I’d be very surprised if they took him on for a third time.
People can say it's his style but he was clearly leading with his head up close, pushing his head around Martinez when he was on the ropes. He got warned by the ref at least twice for use of the shoulder, but was inconjunction of using his head. Positives are he started well for the first 2 rounds, hand speed looked good, he was able to take a breather though and looked a bit ragged from round 2 onwards. I think he's done at the top level now though.
Listened to Steve Bunce and Barry Jones on the BBC pod yesterday. I shouldn't be surprised, but as ever Bunce is happy to ignore anything and everything negative about someone he may want for an interview at some point or who may star on a card for a promoter who will hire him. On this occasion his response to the butting was to blame Kiko Martinez trainer for not raising the fact that warrington is dirty fighter in the pre fight briefing. Not that he was at that briefing and knows whether they did so or not. Certainly no blame attached to the guy doing the butting. Boxing is broken by design.
Josh is a dirty *******. But its no tiddlywinks. Its fighting right? I dont suppose he gives a **** with the world title around his waist. Did what he had to do but in a dirty ******* type of way.
