Joe Bugner seemed to have access to Ingemar Johansson's right hand when in the mood or rattled, (See Richard Dunn, Jurgen Blinn, Winston Allen). I used to train with Pat Cowdell. He could knock holes in you when he held his feet.
I am going to say Greg Page, who could bang with both hands. Runner up goes to Chris Rock, who showed tremendous restraint in Sunday's infamous incident.
Good call, and as Bulldog24 mentioned that was probably because of hand troubles, certainly nearer the end of his career. Although not a truly devastating puncher, Lloyd Honeyghan really lost his power edge later in his career, because of hand problems. And another Brit that struggled too was Paul Hodkinson. Smashing punches into Marcos Villasana's chin for 20 rounds caused him more problems long term than the eye damage.
Despite his Knock Out record, Vitali never sat on his punches, kept that weird kick boxing stance and arm punched guys to death. With all his injuries, perhaps that helped preseve him for his WBC title run.
Dear me, Hoko looked terrible after that fight with Villasana. He looked like Billy Collins Jr after the Resto fight with the eye damage and broken nose. If I remember correctly there was even a hint of he didn't need to go down from the commentary team which seems very unfair. I'm amazed his corner didn't pull him out and save him from himself as he was incredibly brave. Villasana was like a piece of rock wasn't he? Incredibly durable and strong looking. He was a few inches taller than Paul but looked stockier.
Charley Burley. Many of his opponents talked about how hard he hit, and there are many stories of his punching power in the gym. He was also was known for his cautious, dull performances.
Eubank Sr is a time distant fan. Favourite he saw on film, technically, Jersey Joe Walcott. Favourite ever regardless, Jack Johnson. Sr is the man!
I always liked watching him fight. Reading about his journey in boxing, I have a lot of respect for him.
* I think Willie Pep hit a whole lot harder than his record suggests. As it stands, he had over 60 KO's on his record, in spite of the fact that he wore the cuffs a lot when facing second tier opposition.
Laporte, the sloth-like *******. Genuine power, technique and timing in both hands but a borderline sparring partner mentality.
God Eubank had a chin like an anvil. Remember his war cry after a rough round with Carl Thompson? Gave me goose skin, whatever flaws he had as a boxer where well hidden by his sheer pride and eagerness in the ring. Wish he’d been the one to fight Gerald instead of Benn, felt like it’d been a classic with a tenth of the rabbit punches.
Glenwood Brown remembers Eubanks Sr sleeping on the concrete steps inside Gleasons Gym because he couldn’t afford to travel between there and the Bronx, and wanted the best sparring.
