Which 70s/80s era light heavyweight could trouble or even beat prime Joe Louis. And don't say Michael Spinks.

Only one I can think of that annoys him is Qawi. Wouldn’t win but he would trouble the heck out him

Did Joe Louis ever fight a Southpaw in his reign ? I heard once he sparred a Light Heavyweight Southpaw, and then said he would never fight a Southpaw not sure how true that is.

But taking that into account, I'd say Southpaws Marvin Johnson, Mate Parlov, Michael Moorer, gives him issues.

The bob and weave style of Dwight Muhammad Qawi, might trouble him. That's a style Joe Louis never really fought to my knowledge.

Good boxers like Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, John Conteh, would pose stylistic problems.

Awkward boxer like Michael Spinks, would give him fits also.

And finally power puncher Bob Foster would be dangerous, but he lost to pretty much most of the Heavyweights he fought.

Would I pick any of these boxers to beat him over 15 round distance ? Probably not. But then again Joe Louis probably would of lost to Light Heavyweight Billy Conn, had Conn not gone for the KO. So who knows maybe one of them springs an upset, I'd give Michael Spinks the best chance of doing it.

It's interesting because many of these men would have been able to fight as heavyweights in Louis day.

Movement is what Conn used to trouble Louis so much in their fight. Louis like to set his feet and bang away with combos but Conn would let him. That is exactly the type of game plan that Michael Spinks would deploy and a flaw in Joe's game if he had one.

Virgil Hill and Henry Maske are two more guys that were excellent technicians in different ways that had excellent footwork and would not be stationary.

Just to clarify, I don't think either Hill or Maske beat him. I just think they stand the best chance.

I understand that not only was Louis (foolishly) dehydrated for the reason you are aware of, but it is said Conn had to fight that way due to the pressure Louis was applying. I am happy to listen to arguments that this correction is in itself incorrect.

I can't imagine any Light Heavy avoiding Louis's heavy artillery for 15 rounds. All those mentioned would have created problems for Joe with the possible exception of Bob Foster who tended to get blasted out every time he went in with elite Heavyweights.
I know the OP told us not to mention him but I think Mike Spinks is the only one who goes close and could take Joe the distance.

So I've got to send in someone with a 30lb deficit up against one of the greatest HWs to ever walk who was known for his punching power?

Ick. Can I get the mob to lean on Joe to take a dive during the 3rd and then bet against Joe? Because I don't see any other way my LHW is winning. Especially since you won't let me use Spinks.

Many of the 70s and 80s light heavies could have simultaneously fought as heavies I'm the 30s and 40s. It wasn't unusual for light heavies to also be HW contenders

Spinks awkward style might trouble Louis for a few rounds but ultimately gets stopped. Foster vs Louis would be a mismatch. Qawi would get knocked out but stand up to him for as long as he lasts. Not too many.
