Would guys like JD look like helpless children on the mat with a real wrestler? Mm? Was it solely catered to the clinch?

Tom Sharkey held his own with a champion wrestler (who was heavier than him).

They would train with world champion wrestlers. How good that made them at wrestling is debatable, since "world" champion probably didn't mean as much as it does today, and even back then, pro wrestling had lots of fake fights. So you can't trust that their public exhibitions with wrestlers were on the level.

Still, they trained it regularly. The guys who trained them were legitimately good wrestlers. I'd expect any high level athlete to get pretty good at wrestling if they train intensively with elite wrestlers as a job.

I guess the former World light heavyweight champion Paul “The Astoria Assassin” Berlenbach, is deserving of a mention as he was the AAU National wresting champion in 1922 and 1923 before turning his focus to boxing.

Farmer Burns put Billy Papke in his place and threw Stanley Ketchel out of Jeffries camp too.

William Mundoon trained John L Sullivan for a fight and apparently Sullivan hated Muldoon.

So they did, you get to see some nice pics of Muldoon weighing in the fighters of the 1920s, particularly good shot of him adjusting the scales while Greb looks down at the bar, and Flowers to one side, apparently reason for the antipathy towards Muldoon lay in the fact that he would frequently drag John L from the bars, and into the gym, a place Sullivan as he was getting older, hated with a passion. stay safe buddy.

Yes I'm currently reading a book called Shooters: The Toughest Guys In Wrestling. It talks a lot about the old timers up to the present and mentions a lot of boxers and interactions with the wrestlers.

It mentions how they even wanted Frank Gotch to fight Jack Johnson for the belt but of course in a boxing match that wouldn't of gone well for Gotch!

Yes it's said that after training him for one of his fights Sullivan claimed if he saw Muldoon in the street he'd punch him! It mentions they had a match and Muldoon ended slamming him which caused a riot.

It mentions that Sam McVey won some mixed bouts although one was against a fraudulent English man. Bob Fitzsimmons lost to a wrestler too.
