I definitely agree with this! In modern times he wouldn't fight at Heavyweight, ever, since, unlike a Marciano or Dempsey (IMHO), he could never get to over 200 pounds and be effective. If I had a say in his modern career, with today's ridiculous weigh-in system, I'd start him off in the Welterweight arena. (There's decent money to be made there these days.) Then, as he made the adjustment to modern styles, I'd suggest he move up to Super Welterweight and then Middleweight later in his career. It's very possible that he could pick up belts in all 3 divisions, and he'd be extremely popular in all 3 divisions (IMHO, of course).

No he would not, he'd get embarrased and KO'd even by amateurs nowadays.

    Good post, dj
I can actually really see Bob at the welters and light middle. Nothing changes with ko power so he'd be a danger man still.

You know that as fact do you?

The first ever triple weight division world champion, achieved without the aid of Mexican beef or juices from a chemistry lab might get beat by some modern boxers, but be assured Mr Robert James Fitzsimmons would be handing out plenty of beatings himself.

He'd be the light heavyweight heavyweight champ of the world. Fitz had his own brand of boxing combing deadly hitting with tricky delivery. You have to watch for it on the old grainy film, but it there.

I am with you on this buddy, what's the point of saying " if he could adjust, or when he adjusted to modern fighting methods " the whole ethos of pitching old timers against modern day fighters is transporting ( I know, I know, ) the fighter from his era, with all that entails, style, conditions, preparation, against today's fighters , you can't then change them ?
So, in conclusion, I don't think Fitzy would stand an earthly chance of beating any of the top champs of today's era , I mean what would the flat footed, leaning back, shuffling forward, wide open, one punch at a time ( well almost ) make of a fast fisted, fleet footed, master boxer like RJJ , it beggars belief that he could post a win over Jones, well that's me done. stay safe guys.

As an old timer wrote on a forum many years ago ‘styles change but fighters don’t.’
Well, I’d actually go one better and say that Fitz, with all the modern trappings, would only compete, he’d have a picnic.

    Any decent amateur.

If Fitzsimmons were to fight someone like RJJ, he wouldn't even manage to land a single punch on Roy. Roy would toy with him like a grownup would toy with a kid.

He achieved that more than a century ago, against old timers just like him, who suck in comparison to modern boxers.
I'd be willing to bet my house he doesn't stand a chance against any decent amateur, let alone a top pro.

Could you be more specific on what you consider a decent amateur?

Even if he was as bad as you say, he would still be one of the hardest punchers in the world, in whatever weight class he was fighting in.

Well he'd get nowhere near heavyweight (hopefully, for once, nobody will disagree) and he'd be absolutely breaking backs between 140 and 168lbs, breaking people in half, destroying them. You would have to up-match it early because to do otherwise would be irresponsibly dangerous. He'd make Wilder at HW look pitty-patter.

Someone who has a positive record and has fought some good boxers. Say for example the best amateurs from a well known boxing gym.

No proof he'd be that either. Remember that back the he was fighting men who didn't have the conditioning and nutrition we have now, thus their chins were also weaker.
