Ignore this fool, he only repeats the same things time and time again.

Who said you that Fitzsimmons fought this way?

Funny, I've been searching for Jim Jeffries interviews lately, which are difficult to find. In one exchange I found, he was counseling an up-and-coming Rex Layne. He asked Rex, how many miles of roadwork do you do a day? Four, Rex answered proudly. Better make it 14 like we did in the old days, Jeffries answered.

Elite fighters back in Fitz's day treated fighting as a full-time job. And their brand of fighting was based on grueling, soul-sucking endurance. There was no holding and clowning, looking at the clock and trying to burn away precious seconds.

I would contend their conditioning in that respect was superior to even today.

Being the best guy in a competent gym is a smaller pool of competitors than being the best guy in the world of 1895, though.

You must weight modern technique as being extremely important compared to other means of comparing eras.

Name these decent amateurs who he doesn't stand a chance against, as according to your ANY decent amateur would beat him, so let us see this list of amateurs you speak of.

There is literally no way that conditioning or nutrition would improve a fighters chin.

There's dehydration, but I doubt he's referring to that.

That aside, yeah, you're talking about a partly rural society without much motor transport, where all the food is organic. I don't think the nutrition or level of physical fitness was worse for Bob Fitzsimmons than it is for some random non-professional guy at a decent gym.

I don't know about the holding part; Jack "Octopus"Johnson mostly grappled rather than boxed.

But the old guys had to go 20+ rounds so building up endurance was paramount.

Yeah, but Johnson wasn't stalling he was fighting. I'm talking about the guy trying to buy time till the bell. Jack was doing damage!

I know we like to call Johnson holding, but your right, he was twisting arms, and hitting. He was wrestling in the holds which was a big deal back than. Gans and Nelson was other match were both sides were wrestling on the inside.

We have the last round of Lang fight in which Fitzsimmons is almost 50 and ill.

In Corbett fight, he wasn't wide open and used combinations.

Other than wide open (which Fitz wasn’t anyway), you sound like you're describing Canelo.

It is a smaller pool of competition indeed, but the skill level is way way higher IMO.

Yes there is. Being bigger allows a boxer to absorb shots easier.
90s Foreman is a good example of that.
