    Morning!

I'm a bit surprised you can't use Google given I told you where to look. BUT here are three different sources showing that the purse was £30m:

    https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/boxing/how-much-money-anthony-joshua-12964958

    https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/joshua-in-30m-klitschko-fight-0n8sk6mtx

    https://www.bbc.com/sport/boxing/39748791

So this clearly establishes that Klitschko v Joshua was a comparable fight to this one based on purse size, so resultantly your argument doesn't appear to have any grounds. I.e. there is no valid defence of Queenberry's horrible undercard for a fight of this scale.

As for purse splits and paying your own contracted fighter 80% making an event easier to finance than if you paid them 50~55%, I don't think that needs explaining, beyond what others have already said on this thread.

Anyway if, of course, you have some "credible sources" as you put it, I would be happy to be proven wrong.

Otherwise, I guess we have established that this undercard is not only horrendous but there is no excuse for it.

TLDR: this undercard is horrendous, no excuses

I understand Tyson likely did get 20% against Wilder, but that was as a voluntary defence on Wilder's part.

But from what I have read, Tyson got 25% against Wlad, which is inline with the WBO rules on mandatory challengers fighting on the champion's home turf

    Your links are lazy journalism

The BBC one is slightly more accurate as it states an "estimated purse of £30mil"

Purse bids are factual numbers, not estimates. The 30million figure is the projected number they will make including PPV.

The actual guaranteed pot of money to split was £20mil, do some digging and you will see I'm right

The guaranteed pot of money to split in Franks fight is £31 mil, so the two fights can't be compared

Both undercards are ****, but eddies was only marginally better and he spent £11 million less on his main event

Oh I'm sorry, did one of the three articles not meet your standards.

Try the other two...that clearly state the purse was £30m

Btw, I see you have no links

    Jog on mate :ciao:

p.s. I slipped the BBC one in there to see your true intentions in this "discussion", and you didn't disappoint, like a fly to sh1t

As I said, lazy journalism, the first two are reporting the estimated total including PPV.

The BBC article is closer to the truth by saying it's an ESTIMATED 30million, which is not the purse split, the purse split is the guaranteed money not an estimate

The fact is the initial outlay for Franks event absolutely dwarfs Edwards, hence why there is a **** undercard.

Eddie spends far less on main events and still gives us **** undercards

Can't hate on Frank when Eddie does exactly the same thing, only difference is, Eddie will take you for a mug and tell you it's an amazing undercard

As you are being extra particular, I could point out that two of those websites link through to the same article in the Mirror. And considering the Mirror is owned by the same media group as Manchester Evening News, why would you trust one more than the other? Which means it doesn't move the discussion any further forward.

However, I acknowledge your point about if the 30m figure is based on total earnings paid out to the fighter, it would actually be including the upside, which is not the same as an initial purse bid. But I think it is fair to say there are conflicting reports on that.

    But two points,
Firstly, Whyte is not getting any back end on this fight. That is well documented.
Second, as others have pointed out in this thread having to pay Whyte 18%~28% of 31m, is less of a commitment than having to pay 50% of 20m to Klitschko (going by your links). So again, this idea that Warren is having to finance 11m more than Hearn, which means he can't put on an undercard with even a B-tier co-main doesn't wash.

Quite frankly, as a paying customer, how Warren finances an undercard is not my concern. What is my concern is that this undercard is sh1te. And again going way back to my original point, we can quibble over how Joshua v Klitschko compares to Fury v Whyte, but you haven't actually supported your initial argument that Hearn would do exactly the same in Warren's position. Because, as bad as you think the Joshua v Klitschko undercard may have been, it was levels above this.

Having said all that, I do agree with your last point. So how about we just give them both crap? But this time, let's allow Warren to take his kicking in peace on what is an appalling undercard for one of the biggest fights on British soil.

    It is an exceptionally poor undercard for a Stadium event - no excuses. The fight does sell itself, I’ll still pay for it but I would like better value for my money. I’m just a boxing fan, so I don’t follow / prefer promoters, and this isn’t Matchroom bias. But in comparison, undercards for stadium fights that we’ve had recently;

AJ vs Povetkin - Campbell v Mandy, Okolie v Askin, Kuzmin vs price.
AJ vs Parker - Povetkin v Price, Burnett / Corolla / Kelly / Corina / Buatsi in knockovers.
AJ vs Takam - Whyte v Helinius, Buglioni v Richards, Yafai / Taylor / Buatsi / Cordino in easy fights.
AJ vs Klitschko - Quigg / Campbell / Taylor / Corina in pretty easy fights (Campbell had a decent step up.)
AJ vs Usyk - Okolie/ Campbell / Smith / Marku in knockovers.

Some decent cards, but Usyk, Klitschko and Parker were generally poor. The clear difference with the upcoming one is most of them in easy fights but the fighters don’t have great profiles - outside of Tommy Fury the casuals haven’t heard of anyone.

No real depth but it isn’t too dissimilar to what we’ve been served previously.

I'm still haunted by Okolie v Askin!

Those undercards are poor, matchrooms way is to get a name or 2 in easy fights which sells it more to the casuals. I'd rather watch a couple of blood and guts area or English titles than watch a Calum Smith type in with another mismatched opponent.

It’s ****, and I’m not excusing Warren for this at all, but what incentive is there for him to put on a ‘stacked’ (as Sky would say) undercard? Already sold 84,000 tickets or whatever it is on the main event alone, and when FW (or everyone’s favourite Irishman in Dubai) has spaffed so much money on the main event, it’s unlikely that a better undercard is going to result in enough more PPV sales to make it worthwhile.

Plus Warren seems like he barely has enough fighters to cover the few dates he has on BT anymore, so won’t want to ‘waste’ any of his bigger names on the undercard here, when they can headline a York Hall or Brentwood card a few weeks later.

I think BT take their cut on the PPV so the £25 does not go straight in to the promoter.

It is a big fight though and it will sell well PPV wise. I don’t know the numbers but I don’t think it will be at a loss

The undercard is very poor- there's no way to sugar coat it.

I know the main event sells itself and that's the only fight most people are interested in but I feel like Frank has missed a trick here.

Despite Whyte being silent in the build up this fight is massive and the biggest UK fight in a long time. With a decent undercard Frank could have put on an amazing night of boxing and won over some of the Eddie Hearn die hards. But with this undercard a lot of boxing fans may be feeling ripped off

That exactly it, he could have put on a real event. It's just so disappointing from a fans POV and will turn people to find other methods of viewing. Dropped the ball big time here.

Despite the massive purse, Frank is so low rent that he’ll always go for the cheapest option. A huge card with Yarde Dubois Joyce and others would have showcased his fighters and, perhaps , created a buzz for the future regarding tickets and broadcasts. Instead he predictably when with the easiest and cheapest undercard that could leave everyone feeling shortchanged. Let’s hope it isn’t stopped by a cut in the first couple of rounds like Warrington Lara was. He’s a Stone Age level promoter, these days, he’s like Duff and the cartel in the 70s and 80s.

He still reckons it’ll do 1.5m PPV buys as well…
