Unpopular Opinion: Foreman would have KO'ed Ali if he kept the pace he did in the 1st round

I didn't respond because I legitamitely felt bad for you when you asked McGrain to delete all your posts, and claim you were leaving for good, and didn't wanna kick you while you were down. My racist accusation was referring to you, trolling (by your own admission) a foreign poster's English, even after being told it wasn't his first language.

If your comments were so innocent, why did you apologize to the poster twice, then post a thread announcing your departure (lasting all of 1 day)?

How is this an unpopular opinion? It's more or less what Ali himself had to say about the fight.

 

I wouldn't say Ali's speed and reflexes were gone, at least not during the early 70'. They weren't the same, but he was still a very fast fighter.

I'm also kind of confounded as to why Ali's camp agreed to the small ring. They already knew it was going to be hot and humid - adding a small ring to that made it very difficult for the almost 33-year old Ali to move around, as the original game plan was.

 

You are right, the original fight plan was to stick and move. But Ali's stamina was not as it was in 1967, he laid on the ropes more often. George Foreman had plenty of time to prepare for the climate of Zaire but wasted his time walking around smug looking. Ali did prepare, his weight for this fight was 217 lbs.

 

I'm a bit surprised it wasn't lighter actually. In two of his previous three fights (the rematches with Norton and Frazier) he was 212 and moved better than in any other of his fights in the 70's.

 

Ali said he was moving 2 not 3 steps for Foreman's one, combining that with a small, soft ring strongly favored a ring cutting slugger.

 

But that's what great fighters do...... Find a way to win.

 

What do you see as the correct interpretation of the fight?

 

The small ring was a surprise. They agreed to a nineteen foot ring. How do you quantify peak? I'll try. Post exile Ali was 75% of what he was and lost about 5% per year.
