Here is a great analyses of the fight, giving the lie to Howard Cosell's undiscerning eye where he thought it was two gladiators slugging it out "completely with skill".

Support this dude & his channel, the comments show how many people are inspired by his great analyses desire to share his boxing wisdom & feeling.
"The Modern Mixed Martial Artist", but does wonderful breakdowns of The Sweet Science.

I wonder how Foreman has recovered from such punchs and knockdowns, and not in Zaire.
He seems to have been exhausted in Zaire as well.

Exhaustion was the main reason he was out in Zaire. Ali is not knocking down, let alone out, Foreman in a more forgiving climate.

Several reasons: first of all this fight ended in the 5th, with one round accidentally ended a minute early.
In Africa it went to near the very end of the 8th round. That is a lot more time.
Also the temperature & the fight was held at 4 AM to accommodate our TV audiences, that has to make it harder.

Maybe the biggest single reason was Ali frequently not only holding but pulling down with his body weight oin the back of Foreman's neck.
    That is tiring.
Oh & also while missing punches may be more tiring, related to the duration of the fight, Foreman just threw a lot more.

Edit: Foreman was getting exhausted by the end of the Lyle fight anyway, as you would expect throwing constant bombs.

There's not much breakdown or much skill in that brawl. Every fight can broken down, even fights with low level in skill. Look at Deontay Wilder, a clumsy fighter with not much skill but after MMA made a breakdown of him now people is calling Wilder's technique ''underrated". No, I find that stupid. He's just breaking down fights and fighters into pieces like puzzles. There are much more complicated puzzles and there are the much more simple puzzles, but both can be broken down.

MMA's channel is about breaking down fights and fighters for us to understand what is happening and how it works.

Yeah this was definitely not a fight with much skill displayed. I remember in the first round, Lyle threw a wild punch which Foreman easily slipped and Lyle's head hit the turnbuckle. If a fighter today did that, let alone someone in the top 10, we'd never hear the end of it.

I'll echo the thoughts others have already given. It was a fun video. I enjoyed it. It was very helpful in explaining what happened, and why. It also gave me more appreciation for Lyle.

It confirmed that Foreman was sloppy in that fight, though, and didn't add much evidence of great skill on Foreman's part.

    That said, very good thread.

You are 100% right. People just want to see some hidden subtlety in there favourite sloppy fighters- you have to squint pretty hard here.

You think Ali is incapable of KOing George Foreman?
