How does Golovkin Measure Up, To Past Middleweight Greats?

He's a complete champion that can beat a guy so many different ways. What makes him great is his consistency and of course his power and timing. The guy is never out of shape and always well prepared for his opponents but his main problem is that he was a champion during an unpopular time period of the sport.

Bottom line is boxing isn't a mainstream sport anymore and a lot of folks have never even heard of him even though he has the 2nd most title defences in division history. Even folks on this forum badly underate rate him in comparison with champs from more popular era's. Prime GGG is a handful for anyone at MW but his best days are clearly over at this point of his career. I still think he has enough to beat Murata today at age 40.

 

That's right, he's as good as any 160lbs champion before him. Recognition unsung, maybe, might be he'll get it soon if he keeps chugging along and introducing himself to new comers with more and more priceless terminator like KOs, might be he'll age into folk lore status like Archie Moore and start wagging his "gray" fist under young pug chins. I hope, G adjusts to age well and get's to meet his replacement as "The man" at 160lbs.

 

Don't really rate him at all, he never really challenged himself tbh. Solid HOF fighter, made a lot of defenses but wasted his entire career waiting out on easy paydays. Lost his legacy fight with Canelo, hasn't really done much since but wait for another Canelo fight.

 

Not his fault his MW era was weak and even then it s well known that many guys didnt want no part of him(Sturm,Sylvester,Cotto,Martinez erc)

 

He was with k2 promotions for the majority of his career, other than his inflated contract with HBO(which was the downfall for HBO boxing) what else did he bring to the table? Was a half retired, kneeless Martinez supposed to drop his money fights with Chavez Jr and Cotto? Was a overblown, shopworn Cotto supposed to drop his money fight with Canelo? Sturm was comfortable making millions in Germany milking his title, if he wasn't comfortable unifying with Taylor, Hopkins or Abraham he damn sure wasn't going to fight a k2 promoted fighter for peanuts. I'm not buying it that he wasted his career cause other fighters were ducking him, it was all about the money for GGG. If he wanted to challenge himself he wouldn't have stalled the MW division after the Canelo fights. He went straight back to the competition he was fighting since the beginning of his career, that tells you everything about what kind of legacy he left behind.

Those are cop outs imo,why do they even box then?
Also the Sturm situation was when both were with Universum with Universum clearly navigating Sturm away from him which is why he left them.
But everybody is entitled to his opinion.
Martinez could have fought him anywhere after Chsvez jr
Cotto could anywhere after Martinez.

 

I'm not sure how those are cop outs, other than Canelo who eventually fought him and Sturm, none of those fighters were mandatory to GGG. Martinez was literally kneeless after Chavez Jr, the man arguably lost to Martin Murray in his next fight, was approaching 40 and had a cash out fight vs Cotto. Cotto was originally supposed to fight Canelo in a high profile money fight in 2013 at 154 but he lost to Austin Trout so he gambled and decide to try his luck vs Martinez. Once Cotto won the WBC title he had management issues with Top Rank and signed a multi million dollar deal with Roc Nation so he was out of the ring for a year and had a tune up with Daniel Geale to set up the Canelo super fight.

 

Can you explain to me what GGG has done to actively make any type of good fight? Please and thank you

 

Since he fought Canelo twice,Jacobs,Lemieux,Stevens,Derevyanchenko,etc I dont see WHY he would avoid anybody.
Neither you or me dont k ow the behind the scenes business side of things but from the outside looking in it sure seems plenty of guys didnt want that smoke.

 

They are cop outs in the grand scheme of professional prizefighting and fighting to prove who is the best.
Again Politics aside those fights could have happened.If the foghters really wanted it they coupd have.

So I don't get what you're trying to argue about, none of those fighters posed any risk to GGG anyway, other than filling GGG's pockets why did you or anyone wanted to see those fights take place? If GGG really wanted to he could of fought Andre Ward during that time frame since Ward was more than willing to make the fight happen but GGG didn't seem interested in that fight at all. GGG made millions off of the Canelo fights, why hasn't he fought a world class fighter since 2018 despite a multitude of fighters calling him out?

 

Yes Eubank jr.They were supposed to fight and then Chris never signed and that s when Brook jumped in.
I’m saying he was a great middleweight.ATG?Debatable,but not entirely his fault.
Like I said from my first post,his era was weak coupled with guys not wanting any part of him.
Indeed he could have fought Ward,that’s a mark on him.But that wouldnt have been at middleweight.
Also Derevyanchenko was world class and it was in 2019.

 

Stop it man, Derevyanchenko is a glorified journeyman and he beat up GGG and made him cry post fight interview. Was he supposed to be a threat to GGG going in?
