Obviously a fight with Nigel Benn was harder than a fight with McCallum (or pretty much anyone!), even if you beat Benn and lost to McCallum. The guy was an animal
All of a sudden I'm really lamenting the absence of a fight between McCallum and Benn. McCallum wins, but still.......
‘Roy Jones can beat the crap out of my head all he likes, but I’m not letting Mike McCallum snatch my body!’ -Nigel Benn, 1995
McCallum would be far too much for Benn, the style that gives McCallum problems are slicksters like Toney, Kalmabay, Graham, not brawlers like Benn. McCallum would break down Benn and stop him between 8-10 rounds.
McCallum struggled with speed. We know that. We saw that in the Curry, Jackson and Jones fights. Benn was lightning.
McCallum was 40 years old vs Jones and fighting above his best weightclass, Jackson's overwhelming aggression gave him trouble for 1 round, then McCallum soon dispatched him in the next round. And Curry is a counter puncher nothing like Benn, Benn only fights one way going forward. And that would play into McCallum's hands.
You think Benn beats McCallum? I honestly can't envision a scenario where that happens. Lots of holes in Benn's game. Too many for a technician that even Roy Jones couldn't stop when McCallum was 206.
Who said Benn beats McCallum? He’s made for him stylistically. McCallum wouldn’t be far too much for him though - he’d struggle.
Not at all. My favorite Lightweight of all time - Ken Buchanan and I'm American. I liked Steve and he could be fun to watch at times. But he was limited and it showed. The Watts is s perfect example. Nunn spanked him for 12 rounds. Tate easily beat him .........and Collins got dropped and had his hands full.
