    Tyrell Biggs v Jeff Sims

    Round 1: 10-9 Biggs
    Round 2: 10-9 Sims
    Round 3: 10-9 Sims
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 Biggs
    Round 6: 10-9 Biggs
    Round 7: 10-10 Even
    Round 8: 10-9 Sims
    Round 9: 10-9 Biggs
    Round 10: 10-9 Biggs

Total: 97-95 Biggs (actual scores: 97-93, 97-93 and 99-92 all for Biggs)

The fact that Biggs fought the last 8 rounds of this bout with a separated shoulder speaks volumes for his heart. And I think I saw where it happened. Towards the end of the 2nd round a Sims right to the jaw glances off and hits Biggs on the shoulder. That's all I could come up with on when it happened. But regardless of his heart, Biggs still needed to fight and he was really only one-handed through most of this fight, utilizing a good jab. But I'm not simply going to give him rounds because he was a gold medalist, because Sims was in there digging away. I had it closer because I call them the way I see them and I felt some of Sims' full-blooded shots overcame the jab of Biggs. Anyways, a decent enough scrap that was fought down to the last second.

    Buster Drayton vs Said Skouma

Pretty entertaining fight but it was incomplete so it was impossible for me to score, but boy did Drayton throw some wild haymakers in this one geez.

Took a gander at Donald Curry vs. Colin Jones.

Not going to give a full report but here’s the dime-store version:

Colin was very game but severely outgunned. Curry swept the first three rounds with Jones only able to have any success in sport spurts and Donald continually walking him down and backing him up — Curry’s jab was effective when he chose to use it but mostly he waded in and engaged at close quarters.

From the first moments, Curry’s right hand was on target and landing with impact. Several hard shots each round with it snapping Jones’ head back and driving him into a defensive posture. For his part, Jones was intent on landing the left hook to the body and did get through with a couple each round, but most of his punches were missed, deflected or blocked.

In the third Curry really busted up Colin’s nose, a cut across the bridge of it. And in the fourth he did further damage and the ref stopped it for the doctor to take a look and that was that. It was a nasty cut, wide and deep.

I doubt it would have gone more than another couple rounds at most anyway as Jones was getting hit cleanly and frequently and had no answers to change the terms of combat or turn it in his favor.

    Barry Michael vs Lester Ellis

    1 Ellis
    2 Michael
    3 Ellis
    4 Michael
    5 Ellis
    6 Michael
    7 Ellis
    8 Michael
    9 Michael
    10 Ellis
    11 Michael
    12 Michael
    13 Michael
    14 Michael
    15 Michael

    145-140 Michael

So this has been on my watchlist for sometime, it was a great battle from start to finish. One of the best close infighting contests you'll ever see, i thought the fight was very close through 7 rounds. With not much to choose between the two, Ellis had the more consistent workrate and landed some good body shots, but Ellis landed the more eye catching punches which is why i thought he stole a few of the close rounds. The only round which was conclusive was 3rd round where Ellis badly hurt Michael.

But after the 7th round it was pretty much all Michael, as his body shots were starting to wear down Ellis. And Michael never stopped punching as Ellis struggled to stay with him in the champion rounds.

    Overall great battle.

    Usyk vs Huck

Watching certified something in my head. Usyk really puts on a punch perfect display here, and looks unbeatable.

So some would argue its his peak performance. He doesn't lose any rounds, he knocks his opponent out and outclassed him from start to end.

But even though he looks less good in his next fight, the class of opponent is far superior, so surely its more impressive?

Like the old Ali vs Williams issue I guess.

Anyways this was class, no mistake. Forces a ref stoppage in the 10th after a long punishing dominant performance.

D, I checked this out last year. @PhillyPhan69 was conducting a FOTW series where we would all check out one particular fight and add in our two cents on it. I liked his series too, but I don't believe there was immense participation. Anyways, although our scores are a bit different, we both agree that there were gobs of close rounds. Here is what I wrote:

Lester Ellis v Barry Michael (IBF jr. lightweight title)

    Round 1: 10-9 Michael
    Round 2: 10-9 Michael
    Round 3: 10-9 Ellis
    Round 4: 10-9 Michael
    Round 5: 10-9 Michael
    Round 6: 10-9 Michael
    Round 7: 10-10 Even
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Michael
    Round 10: 10-10 Even
    Round 11: 10-9 Michael
    Round 12: 10-9 Michael
    Round 13: 10-9 Michael
    Round 14: 10-9 Michael
    Round 15: 10-9 Michael

Total: 149-139 Michael (actual scores: 147-139, 147-140 and 145-140 all for Michael)

Do not look at these scores and think for a minute that this was some white-wash of a fight. It certainly was not, with every round close. Michael started out pounding the body and stuck with it for 15 rounds. Ellis was tall and rangy but after unleashing a beautiful sharp combo, he would fall into a clinch where, of course, Michael would pound the body. This body work paid dividends in rounds 11 through 15 where it was wilting Ellis. I think Joe Bugner, who was commentating ringside, said it best in around the 9th round, when he said that Michael wasn't giving Ellis the room to get extension on his punches. I thought that was a very apt assessment. When Ellis could fire off a combo, it was beautiful and sharp, but then he would fall back into the clinch. The only thing I would disagree with Bugner on, was that I don't think it was entirely Michael's doing. It was like Ellis wasn't getting the instruction to stay the hell out of an inside fight. Perhaps with the animosity these two showed each other and the inside goading, it may have been a testosterone-fueled point to fight it out on the inside. Much to Michael's liking.

Seems like we differed a bit on this one, i can see how you gave Michael some of the early rounds. You probably liked his workrate and body punching, but i just liked some of Ellis's eye catching punches in some of the early rounds, but the last 7 rounds or so was pretty much all Michael apart from the 10th round.

I'd love a a thread where we all score the same fight, that sounds really interesting. I do like to see how people score fights differently.

FIGHT OF THE WEEK 19- Angel Espada vs Clyde Gray | Boxing News 24 Forum (boxingforum24.com)

Here is an example of how @PhillyPhan69 was running it, which was very clean and clear. Again, we probably just needed more participation.

I seem to have a perpetual backlog of about 120 fights to watch, although not all those would be good choices for a scoring thread.

Fidel Bassa v Dave McAuley (flyweight title)

    Round 1: 10-8 Bassa (scores a knockdown)
    Round 2: 10-9 Bassa
    Round 3: 10-8 McAuley (scores a knockdown)
    Round 4: 10-9 McAuley
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 McAuley
Round 7: 9-9 Even (Bassa's round but he loses a point for use of the head)
    Round 8: 10-9 Bassa
    Round 9: 10-7 McAuley (scores 2 knockdowns)
    Round 10: 10-10 Even
    Round 11: 10-10 Even
    Round 12: 10-9 Bassa
Round 13: Bassa drops and stops McAuley

Total through 12 completed rounds: 114-112 McAuley (actual scores: 114-112, 114-112 and 115-112 all for McAuley)

I remember when this fight took place, read about it in Boxing News and I'm finally getting around to seeing it. Better late than never. An outstanding contest, one which both combatants should be proud of. A real war of attrition, but in the end, Bassa had a bit more. Again, great contest.

    Tyrell Biggs vs Jeff Sims

    1 Biggs
    2 Sims
    3 Sims
    4 Biggs
    5 Biggs
    6 Biggs
    7 Sims
    8 Sims
    9 Biggs
    10 Biggs

    96-94 Biggs

I thought this fight was alot closer than the commentators had it aswell, they seemed to think Biggs was pitching a shut out. I actually had the fight even going into the last 2 rounds, but this fight just goes to show you can literally win a fight on the jab alone. Biggs threw less than 10 right hands after the injury, Biggs sure did have it tough when he was coming up the rankings with this fight and the Bey fight.

It seems these announcers (and this was Wallau and Lampley) just get behind the star or in this case the gold medalist and they don't see anything but his punches. Well clearly, we were looking at the whole chess board without the agenda of pushing the star.
