Could have guided, who would it be? I don't mean training, I mean more in the sense of career decisions like who to fight, etc. For me, I would love to take a crack at either Winky Wright or Roy Jones Jr. Winky could have made so many better decisions imo and Roy... well he could have made so much more money with smart decisions.
Pat Cowdell or Colin Jones. Both exemplary professionals. If you worked as hard as they did, you couldn't help but be successful.
Probably calzaghe...very talented fighter who despite being ducked at some points himself..could have done alot more. I'd back him over anyone except Jones ..but it'd be nice if his resume reflected just how good he was...h2h nightmare
Manny Pacquiao. I wouldn't let him go into politics at the peak of his career, which I think took a lot away from what he could have done in his career.
Paul Williams. Its always easier said than done. Theres a good chance i do infinitely worse. And we cant pretend in this equation that we know the future at the time. So Tall Paul would be up against it. Still, would like to do it in this fantasy scenario. A big X factor is that we dont know the fighters mindset when it comes to purse demands and willingness to risk for reward. A lot of people here would be fired immediately because whatever you would do different from what actually happened may not have lined up with their thinking or priority. Which is why what actually happened actually happened.
David Reed. Would have kept the 14-0 Reed away from a prime Trinidad. Very stupid decision to take that fight. Ruined his career.
I feel like the easiest answer is Darnel Boone.. We’re talking about a guy who KO’d Adonis Stevenson, almost KO’d Kovalev and lost by split decision, dropped Andre Ward, fought Lara and Pascal. The Stevenson, Kovalev and Ward fights were all short notice fights. I would have him fight at JMW or MW and allow him to train properly and have normal training camps for fights. Had this guy had the right managers and promoters he could have been a world champion, he was that good but he fought anybody anytime at any weight and that was a detriment to his career..
I think it's actually a pretty hard question. Most of the fighters that would spring to mind had their nationality, personality or promoter influence working against them. Some things you just can't fix, unless you have a lot of influence in the sport and over your fighter's own decision making.
Deontay Wilder. He was overly protected for way too long, he didn’t need 30-something fights before finally challenging for a world title, and once he had a title, he should have been matched up in more interesting fights. If he had fought better opposition earlier on in his career, he wouldn’t have fallen in love so much with trying to find one big right hand and instead developed his boxing skills more. A 6’7 American heavyweight with ungodly one-punch KO power could have been so much more popular than he was, instead he’s mostly known to casuals as the guy who got battered twice by Tyson Fury
