Joe Bugner Versus Trevor Berbick And Pinklon Thomas

Sleight edge to Bugner

 

I take both over Bugner, especially Pinky.

 

Trevor Berbick in any of these discussions makes my skin crawl. He was not a big time HW in my opinion. Bugner by decision. Thomas by decision over Bugner.

 

Agree, when we watched the Bugner - Frazier fight for FOTW, Bugner looked like an athlete trying to box. He lacked boxing skills and IMO, Frazier won all the rounds, if I remember right no one who scored the fight gave him more than 2 rounds. Bugner would not be able to stop Thomas's jab and would have nothing to get his respect. Berbeck could out box Bugner or beat him in a mauling contest.

 

I think both of those matchups go the distance. The outcome will depend on which versions of Thomas and Berbick show up. Bugner was a defensive fighter and I think both of those other men could outpoint him IF they are in good form

 

Joe against Berbick in a stinker. Pinky in a stinker . Not much fun.

 

The Trevor Berbick that upset Greg Page, and the Pinklon Thomas who outboxed a prime Tim Witherspoon take the fight on points IMO.

 

I give Bugner a good chance, but that's not saying much against these 2 guys. Put him in against a guy with a lot of power and he runs all not. Bugner is one of my least favorite fighters. If you're a big heavyweight then you should be able to punch. Bugner could box but wasn't much of a puncher, other than his ko of Richard Dunn which isn't saying much.

And against Earnie Shavers he was Trashed!

 

Spot on with my assessment. He was a really gifted athlete but not a natural fighter. Could have been trained up to be more effective but lacked offensive instincts. A big, strong, sturdy, brave guy.

 

If we are talking about the very best of Bugner, the one who went toe to toe with Frazier and banged out Richard Dunn and Jurgen Blin, even should have beaten Ron Lyle, he beats both.
Berbick was, on his best night, an obstinate stayer. He didn't have much in the way of skills but could wear down and out last more talented opponents. Bugner would jab and pot shot him from the outside, breaking Trevor up and out pointing him or stopping him late.
Thomas was a very solid Fighter with an excellent, heavy and hurtful jab. Joe would have to win the battle of the left hands. He was certainly the quicker of the two. Bugner on points in a cagey, frankly, unexciting fight.
To get the best out of Joe, you had to rattle or upset him. He always fought well hurt. This was due, in large part, due the death of Ulric Regis after to losing to Bugner in his early pro career.

 

And THAT must have been a Digital ***** !!

 

I'd confidently take Thomas and there's every chance Berbick outworks him over the duration.
