I wish Lewis had fought and beaten someone of note in their prime, thereby justifying his ridiculously elevated status amongst ill-informed, sheep-like fans.

 

Maybe Holyfield wasn't that good in the first place, he'd already been beaten by Michael Moorer FFS. From that we can deduce that any one of Vitali's latter opponents could potentially beat Holyfield.

That because Vitali had the respect not to fight greats who were a decade past their best. Arguments could be made that some Vitali opponents would've given Lewis hell too. Corrie Sanders for example.

 

Bruno and Ruddock were both wrecked by Mike Tyson. Arguably the ultimate excuse for being ready for retirement.

Lennox didn't owe anyvody anything and why should he be obliged to fight when his heart isn't in it?
He made his money beating everyone he fought in his era and beat Vitali.
What Lennox is a lesser man than Vitali the guy who quit?

Well Sanders was pushing 40 himself and he wasn't all that great to begin with. He is probably Vitalis only opponent with a slim "punchers chance" over Lewis.

 

Lewis would have stopped Vitali (or made him quit) with zero controversy in a rematch.

Vitali fans can seethe all they want about how Lewis supposedly ducked a rematch but the facts are:

1) Old Man Lewis, the worst version of Lennox ever, untrained, out of shape and on the verge of retirement, tore Vitali’s face to pieces.

2) Vitali’s most memorable moment of his long, illustrious career was being on the losing end of TKO6.

 

Schooling? Vitali had his face smashed in you complete pair of clown shoes....Jesus Wept.

 

He quit? He quit?!?! Did you even see the fight?! No need to alter history here!

Lennox is the #2 in HW history for me, just behind Louis, but that doesn't mean he's unbeatable.
Vitali should have been his successor, and there's no shame in that. You could do a lot worse.

Louis got beaten, Holmes got beaten, Wlad got beaten, Ali got beaten, all due to age catching up to them. No shame in that
