I'm binge watching Roman Gonzalez fights now. Beautiful transition from defense to offence and timing. I have a build similar to him so he's brilliant for me. This content is protected
Whenever I watch a fight I try and study a fighter. I initially look at their foot work, then I see if they counter punch at all, then I study their defence, do they move their head or rely on a high guard due to lack of head movement. Can they fight at different ranges, what do they do with the lead hand, do they clinch and control opponent physically by framing. Then I look at things like how they set up shots, the combinations they use and why. Last real deep dive I did on a fighter was JMM. I never really understood how he did so well against Pac and so many others. I personally don't think he has a very aesthetic style, he's not the fastest, not the hardest puncher and defensively he does get hit more than you would expect from a fighter labelled a technician. But having rewatched many of his fights, repeatedly I can now see why he's so damn good. He's really gone up in my estimation as a fighter. He has so many subtle skills that I'm sure more knowledgeable boxing fans on here saw early on but for me it took me this long to realise just how clever a fighter he was.
None. Basically that it takes up too much time I don't have, and at the end it hardly matters to me anymore. I like to discuss styles and outcomes of potential fights, but I never go in depth anymore. Boxing just burned me too many times to get really invested like I used to.
Very well pointed out. I would suggest a background check on him aswell and see what amateur experience does he have as this will impact his eagerness and balance at first glance. Certain patterns are very important aswell ie gets hit constsntly by the same punch, makes the same mistake,is predictable in hosnoffense, falls in love with his power too much, staminaissues etc.
Analyze? Most if not all. Truly study, as in watch them in 0.25 over and over again to understand and write their system down? Archie Moore, George Foreman, Sandy Saddler. Jersey Joe Walcott, Joe Louis, Floyd Patterson, and Ken Norton are up there as well. Hagler, Rigondeaux, Locche (feint game and offense in particular) and Robinson from the lower weights.
I dont analyze like i used. I dont watch as much as used to either The guys i study now are guys i try to emulate in the gym. Mostly basic 1-2 boxers. Mikkel Kessler, Kelly Pavlik and Wlad Klitschko I also pepper in Ken Norton, Evander Holyfield, and Joe Frazier
"I have always adhered to two principles. The first one is to train hard and get in the best possible physical condition. The second is to forget all about the other fellow until you face him in the ring and the bell sounds for the fight".- Rocky Marciano So no studying opponents for Rocky and he did ok. I like Rockys philosophy, he honed the things in his control namely his body and his fight style, that which he had no control over he dealt with on fight night with a little help from his trainer Charley Goldman, all 5'1 of him.
When I was fighting I used to have Trinidad’s fights on repeat, I have a heavy lefthook as well so studying him helped me knock some guys out. Holyfield was another one that I watched a lot and of course Tyson but that was when I was younger and fought in the amateurs out of rage
