He noted Wlad’s weight in the listing in which I’d argue he does make the cut. Early-career Wlad and Vitali at 225 and 235 respectively (before bulking to 240/250lbs) were quite mobile and very quick handed, both to the punch and in combination. I’d like to add Felix Savon to the foray as well even though he’s technically a cruiserweight, he’s still bigger than most of the guys listed. They all have that similar broad-shouldered but lean frames to effectively carry weight over 200lbs athletically, it’s not surprising they’d be quicker than the average pudgy or Uber-jacked heavyweight.
Haven’t really delved into the science - but intuitively, perhaps shorter armed punchers and/or practitioners of shorter punches can appear faster than their longer armed, longer punching counterparts? Timing the speed of a punch from A to B is one thing. Pin pointing its max. speed during the course of the given punch is another again. I believe varying the speed of one’s punches, and the power by association, to be very effective - makes it difficult for the opposition to time you, brace for you and properly settle in. The speed of Louis’ movement and punches could appear not so startling at times - but then Joe could, as and when, rip out a lightning fast single, power laden shot and/or dazzle with combination of same. At max. speed, Louis was extremely fast. One only has to marvel at the flashing triple left hook sequence that put Max Baer down - brilliant.
Carl Williams was very fast. His jab, combinations, footwork and linear movement is extremely quick. He can jump in and throw multiple combinations and get out quickly as soon as you try to punch. His jab is long and rangy, versatile and could sting followed by his textbook right straight shot to multiple combinations downstairs and upstairs. Bob Satterfield is dangerously fast. He can beat almost anybody to the punch and that's why many people failed to knock him out. He can send a full wallop, quickly retracts it to send another one. Unless you really has setup a perfect trap to counter him, don't capitalize on trying knock him out.. becuz as soon as you think he's defendless, Satterfield's hands would end up on your face and all you're gonna see is black. Satterfield could blitz quickly too, something a boxer needs to be careful all night. Bert Cooper was super fast with his counters and combinations. He had both speed and power to overwhelm and brutalize his opponents. His signature sneaky right hand has been nightmares to anything it hits. It dropped Holyfield, Moorer and knocked out Fulilangi and McCall. Cleveland Williams was is insanely fast with his left hooks. He was super athletic and could jump his left hook outta nowhere to knock you out. Don't forget to mention his ability to double and triple his left hooks up. Have you seen the way he threw a 5 left hook combination instantly at Liston? His left ad right hand assaults can overwhelm you quickly too! Bob Baker was a speed star during his time. A heavyweight version Floyd Mayweather. He was technically excellent and was oddly fast for a guy who weigh 215lbs. He had amazing speed and combinations, good upper body movement as well as having cat like reflexes. He could punch too but sadly his hand failed him and he had no choice but to take a different approach and changed his style. People compare him to the Joe Louis back in the day. Just goes to show you how fast he was. Carl Williams Bob Satterfield Bert Cooper Cleveland Williams Bob Baker I find it weird how names like Wladimir Klitschko, Razor Ruddock, Tommy Morrison & Zora Folley were mentioned before these guys.
Cooper was not a good counter puncher he countered Mercer so much because he never moved his head after he punched.
He did drop Holyfield with his right hand counter, he knocked out Fulilangi brutally with his right hand counter, he dropped Moorer hard with his right counter, he staggered Hipp with his counter right. You can't just becuz the Mercer fight he's not a great counter puncher, you've gotta admit Mercer was simply relentless during their bout.
