Not everybody with bipolar disorder chooses to go down the medication route.

Bipolar disorder requires lifelong treatment with medications, even during periods when you feel better. People who skip maintenance treatment are at high risk of a relapse of symptoms or having minor mood changes turn into full-blown mania or depression. So what happened before these medications became available?

Lobotomies and forced sterilization. Greater incidence of religious/cult leaders if you go back further. That thing Catholics do when they think someone is possessed by demons.

Some of them simply kept it in check by drinking heavily, or painting trees.

The great Forum Demi-God champion Cleveland Williams had mental issues, he attacked his girlfriend with a cleaver and during road work skipped off to the police station to get it back.

Sounds like something a certain Jones would do. Jim Croce told a story about how Jones went AWOL off an army base, and then came back demanding his pay. Although I have my doubts Croce served in the same unit or even time; it was a story making the rounds (no pun intended.)

More seriously, this is a good example.

Come to think of it, weren't Machen, Folley, and Williams all more or less simultaneous examples of unstable elite contenders? At a time where "Freud" Patterson held the title and was considered incurably neurotic for basically being a normal introvert?

They are just us in a different circumstance, I pity all of them. Cleveland, Liston, Machen, and Patterson all suffered varying degrees of internal agony so full of substance it surfaced instead of being pushed deep within the soul. Patterson was a man who once said he felt the most love and warmth in his life being laid flat on his back. Taking it at surface meaning is sad, reading deeper opens the heart even more. side note, I know nothing of Folley.

No, many found ways to cope with it indefinitely.

Wow! You really don’t know bipolar do you?

You cannot ‘cope’ with genuinely believing you’re Jesus Christ, partying every night (and all day, even in supermarkets) and never sleeping. It’s impossible. You utter pillock. You can’t change your fkn brain chemistry when it’s imbalanced (without meds).
