Terry Norris, Tommy Hearns, Vasquez (only guy to really beat Wright for years), McCallum. Its a short list. That's with unbiased judging However, if 154 had been around as long as the traditional weight classes this list gets longer.
The Vasquez fight was somewhat early on for Winky and was when he was more of a mover and not the high guard hard jabbing Winky that was him at his best. I actually think he beats prime Norris the same way that he dominated Shane. His jab really neutralized Shane's hand speed and combination punching and I think he would do the same to Terry. I agree that Hearns and McCallum would beat him.
Winky wright had the best gloves up defense ever, tighter than a Virgine Borat would say lol. In his fight with Julio Cesar Vasquez he was knocked down several times. He tightened up his defense immensely after that fight The reason Trinidad didn't fight Mosley: wright The cleanest guy in the game: winky, didn't drink nor smoke also turned away from others who did The reason why Jermain Taylor fought one of the best to a draw: winky. The reason Vargas had a good win on his resume before he met Oscar and Trinidad: winky. The reason Mosley couldn't knock him out: winky wright!
Agreed with the Vasquez fight, however its difficult for me to rank him ahead of Vasquez as Vasquez did beat him convincingly and I think JCV gets underrated. But I would lean towards what you are saying in that a prime matured Wright has a good chance of beating Vasquez. I'll disagree with the Norris assessment. Mosley was a guy moving up the weight classes when he met Wright, unlike Norris who was a lifetime 154 lb guy. I also think Norris is way more dynamic and impressive fighter than Mosley at 154 against a variety of fighters. Norris' kryptonite is a weapon that Wright doesn't have in his arsenal, KO power. I think Norris will deal with the jab and end up on the end of a decision win
I remember Winky fighting B-Hop at a 170 lb catchweight. He had no business at that weight. And at 160, he had a good fight with JT and DOMINATED an older Tito but even then, you could tell he had a little excess on him. At 154, he was a BEAST. It's a shame we didn't get to see him fight more top tier fighters at that weight when he was in his prime. The only true glimpse we saw was his dismantling of Mosley.
He deserved the win over Taylor. I was so mad and felt bad for him. He would have been undisputed at 2 weight classes.
IIRC, more had Winky winning than JT winning but I think it was close enough where a draw wasn't outrageous. Winky took the last 2 rounds off and gave the fight away.
It’s hard to say he isn’t since 154 has always been a stop gap division where JWW and WWs guys move up for a belt or where MWs would normally start their career before moving up. Hearns Vargas Castillejo Norris Winky If Jermell beats Castano and become undisputed he definitely will deserve to be up there..
