Seeing Whyte v Fury, got me thinking. Wilder would flatten Whyte as I have always thought. But then I was thinking of Wilder being underestimated. Technically he is limited but he still managed to land some monster shots on the best defensive boxer in the division in Fury. Could any other current heavyweight contender/Champion have took those shots Fury took and continued ? If not, as I think, how would Usyk or AJ not get knocked out by Wilder as they get hit more than Fury. Regardless of Fury's skills if he never had this freakish punch resistance he would have been knocked out twice by Wilder. What's people's thoughts on this?
Yes. Technically Usyk different league. Would make Wilder look silly. But this is the thing, Uysk is easier to land on than Fury, and Wilder would have a big reach advantage. So what's the odds on Wilder not at least hitting Uysk with 1 shot similar to what he hit Fury with?
He's 37 years old this year and once his speed of right hand goes he's got nothing. Classic case of a fighter who could get old overnight especially with those wars with Fury.
I agree he could, but will need to see if that's the case, if he fights on. Normally punch power is last thing to go.
If he is, he has not proved it by beating Stiverne, Molina, Duhaupas, Szpilka, Arreola, Brezeale, and Washington. I will give him some credit for Ortiz, who, despite being 50 years old, and having high blood pressure, has managed to revitalize his own career yet again. He was a decent scalp. Wilder is demonstrably 4-7 behind Fury, Joshua, Usyk, and possibly Ruiz, who beat Joshua, which brings Parker and Whyte into the mix since the last three own victories over each other. He just didn't do enough, and that has everything to do with his own and his teams insecurities over his lack of technical skill.
The power ? My point is, he hit Fury with shots Joshua could not withstand. Could Usyk take those shots? Fury is most elusive heavyweight and still got tagged of Wilder. Do you think AJ and Usyk would avoid those shots ?
It's an interesting question that we're sadly unlikely to ever have answered. Time isn't on his side, the Fury trilogy will have taken a toll and frankly the chances of Wilder fighting Joshua or Usyk are slim to none. We all know Wilder is extremely unlikely to win on the cards against any technically proficient fighter. As a case in point I gather he was behind in both fights against Ortiz. But as we saw there twice, he remains dangerous all fight if he doesn't get put away. He'll keep coming. The question, which is not unreasonable to ask, is does Wilder starch everyone but Fury? Fury showed the best way to win in Wilder 2, where you put him on the backfoot, remove his leverage, don't give him time to set and bully him. Who is capable of replicating that though? I don't think AJ has that sort of courage these days, I can think of others with the bravery but lack of foot speed and head movement. Usyk is obviously in a different stratosphere to Wilder but what would be his path to victory? A more well executed and aggressively counter punching version of Fury's tactics in Wilder 1? That's my hunch and he could pull it off he's that good, but I can't escape the feeling that however much he made Wilder look like a clown, at some point Usyk would be receiving the chin check of his life.. It's interesting. I hope Wilder isn't too broken or suddenly gets old and actually goes on to test hinself against some other top heavies before he retires. It will give us a better handle on what Fury achieved with that trilogy. If Joyce beats Parker and isn't then in line for a title shot, I would love to see him face Wilder. That would be highly entertaining and instructive.
Wilder has beaten no one of note, cant box on the inside, can't box on the back foot, avoided power punches like the plague (including Whyte) been dropped by jounymen and was dropped against a half glazing body shot that didn't connect by Fury. There's about 20 guys in the divison I would back to beat Wilder.
Wilder lost every round in three fights against Fury in which he didn’t score a knockdown and pretty much the same in two fights against Ortiz.
Great post. I agree. Usyk would be better than Wilder for 99.9% of the fight, as technical he is on a different planet. It's that 0.1%.
