Deontay Wilder In The 70s

Baer did not hit as hard.

 

77 Ali gets beat by plenty of fighters. He was way slower and had lost a lot of mobility. Couple that with the mistakes he made due to not having proper fundamentals, and Ali is very vulnerable.

 

He does ok. I see a lot of toss ups.

Losses -- Loses to a not fully faded Ali. Loses to Holmes. Loses to Quarry. Trips over his own feet fighting Jimmy Young, ends up KO'ing himself.
Toss-ups -- Has a fight with Foreman that resembles Foreman-Lyle. Has a fight with Lyle that resembles Foreman-Lyle. Gets battered around by Frazier until he nearly removes Frazier's head with a lucky right. Frazier gets up, but put back down a few times.
Wins -- sends Norton home on a stretcher.

 

Doesn't mean Wilder is one of them though. Can't see Ali being stopped by one power shot and Wilder is extremely sloppy finisher.

 

How can you know that? You base it on 1930s footage, which usually runs at uncorrected speed?

You have no idea who punched harder between Baer, Shavers and Wilder.

 

If Wilder faces the Ali that Shavers faced, I'd bet my house he knocks him out.

 

Betting your house in a boxing match is one of the most stupid things you can ever do. Betting against Ali in boxing match is even worse than that...

 

To be fair, I'd confidently bet on Wilder against that Ali.

 

Fury most certainly doesn't hit any harder than peak Holmes. Wilder would get knocked silly by that overhand right of Larry's...

I'm not sold that Larry gets knocked down, either. Wilder was even more wild than Shavers, and Holmes only got knocked down once in 23 rounds against Earnie. Btw, Wilder ain't much better a finisher than Earnie, either.

 

Wilder is a better finisher than Earnie Shavers was.

Wilder stopped every man he faced over his 13-year pro career except Tyson Fury, and he had him down four times.

How on earth do people continue to say Wilder can't finish opponent when he finished ALL of his opponents except Fury, and came damn close to stopping him in their first fight and the third fights?

The list of people Shavers failed to stop in his pro career is a long one - from journeymen, to ranked contenders to absolute hillbilly nobodies.

Wilder's "failed to stop" list has one name on it ... the current world champ.

 

But Wilder never stopped anyone the caliber of Ken Norton...a Norton who'd just given prime Holmes the fight of his career. Can't say he stopped someone the level of a Jimmy Young or Ellis, either.

Wilder never fought anyone like Jimmy Ellis, because failed middleweights don't become heavyweight boxing champions anymore.

Nobody today could lose FIVE fights at middleweight and move up to heavyweight and win a vacant belt, like Jimmy Ellis did.

Looking around today, there aren't any highly rated heavyweights who lost FIVE times at middleweight, like there were 50 years ago when Shavers knocked out Ellis.

Do you see anyone who challenged the Charlos with FIVE losses moving up to heavyweight and winning a vacant heavyweight belt? I do not.

But I'm sure if a guy who lost FIVE times at middleweight moved up to heavyweight today and somehow managed to win a vacant belt, Wilder would take care of him posthaste.



Don't hold it against Wilder that he was outweighed by 20, 40 or 50 pounds and was knocking guys out, but didn't get around to knocking out some failed middleweights who can't even crack 200 pounds.

I'm sure he'd prefer to fight 180 and 190 pounders like Earnie did.
