Fighters that blew your mind/ once in a lifetime talents

Hagler and McCallum were more products of Spartan training and dedication than gifted .
They're not as gifted as Jones Jr. Or Toney. Hagler couldn't do what Toney did as far as fighting successfully over multiple weight classes. But Hagler beats Toney convincingly at Middleweight, his focus, dedication, and his conditioning would be the difference.

Jones Jr. Is possibly the most gifted boxer in history. But the problem is he never faced anyone who could push him in his prime. Hopkins, McCallum and Toney the 3 best fighters he faced in his prime each had a major question mark by them.
Hopkins was green , and in my opinion very overrated . And still is.
McCallum was beyond his prime years.
Toney had a history of and was lackadaisical when he fought Jones. Didn't like to train at the level he was.
When Jones Jr slowed we saw his ability to take a shot was average, at best. A great chin cannot be taught, either a fighter has one, or doesn't.
That poses the question of Jones Jr in his prime could he avoid the firepower of ATG'S like Robinson, Hagler, Monzon , over a full fight , or would they have figured out a way to reach him?
I personally believe they would've.
As athletically gifted as Jones Jr. Was he still was very flawed skill wise.

Roy was something else. Definitely a one off, you just couldn’t see anyone beating him. Awesome fighter and an ATG imo.

 

RJJ. No one has looked so unreal.

 

Seemingly the Radar only trained 9 days for the fight. Immature kid but his reflexes /antennas were out of this world.

 

As awesome as James is, he speaks like a mongloid thanks to all that sparring.

 

Another vote for Roy Jones

 

Nonsense. In his prime, at his best, he'd take that lot to school.

I think that Roy gets sold short on his athletic ability. I don't feel many people on here know about it, but when you have it in such an abundance ghat NOBODY in this sport with it's long history has come even close to his athletic ability, it overwhelms skill. Look at Roy/Toney.

If you want to learn boxing then watch James. But even boxing masterminds like him can be made to look stupid if they meet a once in a lifetime freak.

Monzon would have been made to look foolish. Marv has no chance. He went to war too often. Roy's hitting him in ways he just cannot prepare for.

 

I would really like to hear your argument for Bernard Hopkins being overrated…. You could start a separate thread on that one if you like

 

I have always rolled my eyes at this.

Unless it’s down to what his dad considers ‘real’ training — ‘you sparred less than 25 rounds today, that doesn’t count as a training day’ kind of stuff — it just doesn’t pass the smell test. I mean you can look at the guy and see he’s beyond fit and in at least as good a shape as he was for other title fights, if not better.

Basically I don’t buy it.

 

Samart Payakaroon simply brilliant! Perhaps the greatest Muay Thai fighter of all time. Turns his attention towards boxing, KO’s Lupe Pintor to win the WBC junior FW title. He loses the belt to Jeff Fenech but not before becoming the first guy to score a KD on Jeff in the process. I find it amazing what he was able to do as a participant in different combat sports at a world class level…+ I simply enjoy watching him operate
