Amazing that JLR is 21 years old here and lost to Ruben Oliveras when he was just 18. And still a few years short of really entering his prime and manages to by consensus here have gotten the better of Alexis Arguello.

In fairness, I'm sure if he was to face Arguello in a title fight a few years later, it'd be a very different fight for both.

Kenny Lane v Ludwig Lightburn (10 point must scoring)

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 LL
    Round 3: 10-9 Lane
    Round 4: 10-9 LL
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Lane
    Round 7: 10-9 Lane
    Round 8: 10-9 Lane
    Round 9: 10-10 Even
    Round 10: 10-9 Lane

Total: 98-95 Lane (actual scores: 98-92, 100-92 and 99-90 all for Lane)

I love these old 10 rounders from the old 'fight of the week' or Gillette Cavalcade of Sport. Good matchmaking and the fighters put on a show. This was out of Miami and I really feel those official scores did not tell the tale of what went on. Lightburn was one nice fighter with a nice tight stance and sharp punches. Meanwhile, the southpaw Lane did not so much possess a right jab as it was more of a right swipe. He was a bit awkward but had an uncanny sense of finding the opening and placing his shots. Every round was tight, which is why I said those scores don't tell the tale. One might think Lane walked all over him, but nothing could be further. Again, this was one tight fight.

I just have to say that Ludwig Lightburn might be the greatest name I have ever seen.

I know, that is an awesome handle. I recall Jimmy Lennon Sr. years ago would always throw some moniker on a fighter at the last second (Hercules Weaver, King Carlos Palomino). Well, he referred to Jose Luis Martin Del Campo as 'the man with the colorful name'. That nickname would be so apt for Lightburn.

Possibly, but I don’t think it would be less competitive or that AA would necessarily have an upper hand. Arguello at lightweight was good but not the dominant force he’d been at feather or super feather, and JLR was still on the upswing.

I always liked Jimmy’s announcement that a guy weighed in at a ‘trim and ready’ 135 pounds or whatever. Just a nice little touch.

I’ve met and interacted with Jimmy Lennon Jr a few times and he’s, well, classy. I mentioned how much I loved his dad as a ring announcer and he just lit up with pride.

    Joshua vs Johnson

AJ is a different beast here. He's confident now as he's beaten two British gatekeepers, and this is a man not brought in to win, but to give him rounds.

AJ really goes through the gears and once it's established he's the quicker man, it's pretty much all she wrote.

Smashes him and should really get a 1st round ko, round 2 starts as the previous ended and he forces the stoppage.

Brilliant performance against a tricky negative fighter.

My favorite has to be Chuck Hull. Loved his style.

Michael Ayers v Wayne Rigby 1

Every once in a while, you need a fight to remind you just why you watch boxing and this was one of those fights. I’d heard about this being a British classic but didn’t know the outcome, so this was a joy as each round upped the ante and there were several shifts in momentum.

Ayers was a tough fighter (never stopped) but I doubt he came closer to it than here in the 8th round. After fighting his way into the fight after a shaky start and then taking the lead on my scorecard courtesy of a knockdown in the 6th, he was in serious trouble himself two rounds later.

The timing of the knockdown saved him as there was no time for Rigby to mount a follow up and he weathered the remaining storm in round 9. Still, the stoppage in the 10th came as a surprise as Rigby had been fighting on pretty even terms until Ayers turned up the heat one more notch and Rigby staggered around the ring and the ref decided he’d seen enough.

Brilliant fight from start to finish.

    1 9-10
2 9-10 (Rigby rocks Ayers early on)
    3 9-10 (close)
4 10-9 (close again. Ayers has definitely worked his way into the fight over the last couple of rounds. Terrific back and forth)
    5 10-9
6 10-8 (Ayers had been getting on top the last couple of rounds and he makes it official with a KD. To his credit, Rigby fights back well over the remainder of the round)
    7 10-9
8 8-10 (Holy ****! I did not see that coming. Rigby looked like he was on a downward curve and a bit wobbly in the previous round but comes out fighting and drops Ayers hard at the end of the round. Ayers was badly hurt too but luckily there was no time left. He gets to his feet and pounds his chest - he’s a warrior)
9 9-10 (Rigby keeps the momentum going from the previous round. Ayers still looks like he’s recovering from the KD but starts firing back towards the end of the round. Great heart.)
    (84-85)
10 Ayers TKO Rigby (incredibly, Ayers comes back again and puts Rigby on unsteady legs and the ref steps in)

Y'know, I actually met Wayne briefly in Failsworth high street not too long ago.

In my first few weeks at college, I was coming home from harpurhay and I had to pick up some, errr, recreational goods, from one of my cousins in Collyhurst. He was in Failsworth and he'd agreed if I met him there instead of waiting at his house, he'd give me a lift home. Obviously I jumped on not having to get a tram or a train, and as I was walking up to the high street to meet my cousin, s man who looked suspiciously like a war torn boxer came out of a cornershop. He caught my eye at first and knew I recognized him. It clicked after a minute while he was smoking a cigarette who he was and embarrassingly, I actually thought he was Michael Ayers. He was gruff, slurred and seemed like he was having a bad day but he was amazed someone so young recognized him. I told him he was a real warrior and I loved his fight with Ayers, promptly apologized for getting his name wrong and caught my ride.

    Soo-Hwan Hong v Hector Carrasquilla

    1 Hong
    2 Carrasquilla 4 knockdowns wow 10-5
    3 Hong wins by KO

    19-15 Carrasquilla

Wow @Jel thanks for recommending me this fight, i knew nothing about this fight coming in nor did i know the result. But this fight certainly surprised me, the 1st round Hong came out aggressively, landed some good body and head shots i felt he won the round clearly. I was kind of watching this fight casually then all of sudden the 2nd round become crazy, the 1st knockdown by Carrasquilla was one of the most beautiful knockdowns i've ever seen. Left uppercut, two left hooks, boom down does Hong that was a great knockdown, and then to my surprise Hong went down a further 3 times, i never thought i'd be scoring a 10-5 round but here it was haha.

Amazingly Hong came out aggressively for the 3rd round, seemed to forget everything that happened in the 2nd round. And just went out there attacked Carrasquilla got him in trouble on the ropes, and finished him off with two left hooks and that was that Hong wins by KO.

Great little fight with an amazing comeback thanks for suggesting me this one @Jel

Vicente Saldivar vs Howard Winstone II

    1 Winstone
    2 Winstone
    3 Even
    4 Saldivar
    5 Saldviar
    6 Saldivar
    7 Saldivar
    8 Winstone
    9 Saldivar
    10 Saldivar
    11 Saldivar
    12 Saldivar
    13 Saldivar
14 Saldivar 10-7 there was only one knockdown but i scored it 10-7 for how dominant Saldivar was
    15 Saldivar

    147-137 Saldivar

So my first time watching Saldivar and Winstone, i chose the 2nd fight as i heard this one was the most exciting fight of their trilogy.

I thought Winstone clearly won the first 2 rounds, he showed some nice boxing skills great jab nice right hand. Keeping the fight at distance even stunning Saldivar with the right hand in the 2nd round.

In the 3rd round Saldivar started to pick it up, and this round was alot more competitive compared to the first 2 rounds. and it was a very close round which i scored even, but after that Saldivar was clearly the better and stronger fighter. Winstone just couldn't keep Saldivar off just who kept coming and coming, Saldivar wasn't dominating the fight. But you could clearly see he had the advantage in most rounds with the heavier punches.

The fight for me during rounds 11-15 were very punishing for Winstone, infact it was a beating and i don't quite know how Winstone see the final bell. And what a difference Saldivar looked in the beginning of the fight, compared to the championship rounds. It looked like two different fighters, as Saldivar turned into a beast in the final 5 rounds.

I actually scored the 14th round 10-7, as i felt it was such a dominant round for Saldivar. That he should get an extra point. But what heart shown by Winstone to get through them last 5 rounds, i don't know many fighters who could of stood up to that barrage.

Overall an entertaining fight with a good contrast of styles, i scored it very wide for Saldivar but that doesn't quite tell the whole story. Winstone was very much in the fight for the first 9 rounds, and showed some really nice skills and a great jab to making it competitive. But Saldivar battered Winstone down the stretch to win it comfortably on points.

Thanks to @Jel once again for the recommendation.

Was Wayne trained by Brian Hughes at Collyhurst and Moston Lads Club in Manchester?

I was there in 1992 and was looking for a gym and finally found that one. Brian was a wonderful guy. Pat Barrett trained there and a bantamweight prospect I think named Dermody? I vaguely think I might have met Rigby, who would have been in the earliest stages of his pro career, but I could be mixing him up with someone else.

I actually have no idea, but I do know there's a big poster of this fight on the wall at Moston and Collyhurst now. They also have a big fight poster of Thompson vs Nelson and I know Carl Thompson definitely didn't train there, so who knows.

But it makes sense he'd have started there. The gym is about fifteen minutes away from Failsworth and is by far the most popular gym in North Manchester. Probably the second most popular in Manchester after Jimmy Egan's.
